Hacking a Nintendo Switch usually starts with the internet: you smuggle a rigged save file onto the console through Nintendo Switch Online, then hope you’re on the right firmware version before Nintendo patches the hole. A newly revealed exploit for the Switch and Switch 2 skips all of that — which is exactly why it’s turning heads.

A developer going by Gezine has demonstrated a method that works on both the original Switch and its successor. What sets it apart is that it doesn’t rely on the usual tricks. Earlier exploits almost always leaned on modified save data or flaws in WebKit, the engine behind the console’s built-in browser. This new one touches neither.

Why working offline actually matters

Previously, getting a homebrew exploit onto your console meant transferring special files over Nintendo’s network — which forced you to stay on a specific firmware version where the vulnerability was still alive. Update too soon, and the window closed for good. Gezine’s exploit removes that dependency entirely: according to its creator, it works with no network connection and is compatible with every version of the system software.

That’s a real shift for anyone following the homebrew scene. There’s no need to race the clock between a console’s launch and the next patch, because the method isn’t tied to any particular firmware in the first place.

What ARM PAC has to do with Switch 2’s defenses

One detail makes this discovery even more notable: Nintendo genuinely hardened Switch 2’s security compared to the original console. Its browser engine picked up ARM PAC (Pointer Authentication Code), a mechanism specifically meant to make WebKit-based exploits much harder to pull off. That was Nintendo’s bet.

The catch is that the new exploit doesn’t touch WebKit at all — which lets it slip past one of the very barriers Nintendo built to stop this kind of thing.

Worth being clear about the limits, though: this isn’t a full jailbreak. The method only grants user-level access, which isn’t enough to take full control of the system, run pirated games, or touch the kernel. Still, for the homebrew community, it’s a meaningful foothold — the kind of base that could eventually support save-backup tools, retro console emulators, and other unofficial software.

What’s worth keeping in mind right now:

  • The exploit works on both the original Switch and Switch 2.
  • No internet connection or Nintendo Switch Online file transfer required.
  • It’s not tied to a specific firmware version.
  • It bypasses WebKit entirely, sidestepping ARM PAC protection.
  • It only provides user-level access, not a full system jailbreak.

There’s no word yet on a public release of the tool, and that gap matters: proof-of-concept demonstrations and a tool ready for everyday users are usually separated by a fair amount of time, and Nintendo has a track record of moving fast once something like this surfaces. Still, the fact that Switch 2’s defenses were bypassed without touching WebKit at all is a warning sign for the company — it suggests there are other ways in that haven’t been made public yet.
