Mojang is preparing a major update for Minecraft — Sulfur caves and a unique transformer mob will appear in the game. The studio hosted the March Minecraft Live 2026 event, where it announced a thematic update titled Chaos Cubed. The patch with serial numbers 26.2 (Java Edition) and 26.30 (Bedrock Edition) should reach release in the second quarter of 2026 — sandbox fans have very little time to wait.

What does the Chaos Cubed update for Minecraft 26.2 and 26.30 include?

Sulfur caves minecraft biome

The main advantage of the upcoming patch is the expansion of the underworld. The developers from Mojang decided to add a biome called Sulfur Caves to the game. You should look for them at the level of the deep shale, where the most dangerous pickaxe work usually boils. Visually, the location stands out with sulfur ponds, but you can’t walk around it without looking back. The water exudes a poisonous gas, which instantly puts a “Nausea” effect on the character — an extremely unpleasant detail for those who are used to the quiet farming of resources.

New blocks and resources of Sulfur Caves – cinnabar and sulfur

The architecture of the new biome is based on three main types of blocks. Builders will definitely have a place to turn around — Mojang has traditionally delivered a pack of derivative materials.

  • Cinnabar and Sulfur blocks are the base for decoration. Polished, carved versions and even classic bricks are made from them.
  • Active sulfur is the very pest block. It is he who generates clouds of gas, turning cave exploration into an endurance test.

In addition to gas attacks, researchers of the underworld should prepare for the specific geography of this place — Sulfur caves dictate their own rules of survival and pharma.

Where are cinnabar generated and how to extract it in new caves?

Cinnabar cave stalactites minecraft

This biome is located exclusively in the deep shale layer, occupying the Y-levels from -48 to -64. This is a dangerous neighborhood: ancient cities and skulk biomes are usually located nearby, so the player’s nerves will be stretched to the limit. Visually, the location resembles a geologist’s nightmare — dense networks of stalactites made of rust-red cinnabar blocks hang over yellow ledges and sulfur pools.

From the point of view of mechanics, everything is standard: cinnabar has a strength of 5 units (an analogue of ordinary stone). If you hit it with a pickaxe with Silk Touch enchantment, you will get a clean block, but without Silk Touch, there is a 50% chance of knocking out only 2-4 units of ore. This is great news for automation enthusiasts — such a resource will perfectly fit into redstone farms, especially in conjunction with quartz from neighboring locations.

How does gas and explosions work in Minecraft’s Sulfur Caves?

Active sulfur is the heart of the threat of this biome. The block pulsates with an interval of 10-15 seconds, throwing out a cloud of poison within a radius of 5 blocks. Direct contact guarantees the “Nausea II” effect for as long as 20 seconds — the screen will start to rotate so much that the character has eaten too much suspicious fly agaric soup. Without a stability potion, the chances of survival in such conditions drop by 30%, as it becomes almost impossible to navigate in space.

The physics of environments is interestingly worked out:

  • With water: Sulfur lakes retain gas longer, slowing its evaporation.
  • With lava: Upon contact, an instant detonation occurs — a mini-explosion with a radius of 3 blocks.
  • Profit: After such a clap, sulfur powder falls out, which is critically important for crafting advanced gas traps.

Mortality and dangers of Sulfur caves – what is the danger of the biome

The danger of the biome is reinforced by its inhabitants, slippery sulfur cubes. They spawn in groups of 2-4 individuals wherever the light level drops below 4 units. These mobs don’t just attack, they systematically push the player straight into clouds of poison or deep crevices.

The statistics of the first snapshots are inexorable: about 40% of novice deaths were recorded in these caves. Without Totem of Undying or at least Elytra for a quick escape, an attempt to farm cinnabar often ends up with a full inventory vape. Coming here unprepared is a dubious idea, but the reward in the form of new building materials is worth it.

The Sulfur Cube is a transformer for creative mechanisms in the game

Perhaps the most interesting moment of the Chaos Cubed presentation is the Sulfur Cube. This is not just another slime, but a full-fledged tool for customization and entertainment. Its main feature is the “absorption” of objects.

The mechanics make an impression as follows: you give a mob any block, and it instantly takes on its physical properties. At this point, the Sulfur Cube freezes — it cannot be destroyed by conventional methods, but it can be used as a bouncing ball. If you hit such a “bun”, it will simply bounce to the side. To get everything back as it was and take your resource back, you’ll have to use scissors — (yes, the tool is back in business). Apparently, in the hands of creative players, this cube will become the basis for hundreds of new mechanisms and mini-games.
