Studio 4A Games is preparing to turn the idea of the post—apocalypse upside down – the official announcement of Metro 2039 is expected on April 16 on the Xbox First Look broadcast. The fourth part of the cult franchise, judging by recent reports, will be the direct heir to the ideas of the book “Metro 2034”, but with a much darker connotation. Insiders confirm that we are waiting for not just a sequel, but the strictest chapter in the history of the series.

What is known about the plot of Metro 2039?

A leak from the IGDB database has revealed a synopsis that is changing the balance of power in the Moscow subway. The year is 2039. 25 years have passed since the nuclear strike, and the remnants of humanity in the tunnels have finally found a single ruler. However, there is nothing to be happy about. The Hunter, the fanatical leader of Sparta, seized power and established the regime of the New Reich.

His methods are predictable but effective: total control, propaganda, and endless fear of some external enemy. The hunter is preparing a large-scale campaign to the surface, turning the survivors into cannon fodder for his new war.

In these circumstances, the second main character appears — a Stranger. This hermit lives in the wilderness outside of Moscow, trying to escape from his own nightmares. Apparently, the past will eventually overtake the hero, forcing him to break his old oath and return to the poisoned heart of the capital. (Yes, right into that very Subway).

What can you expect from the gameplay of the new Metro?

The developers of 4A Games are true to themselves: Metro 2039 remains a classic action FPS where survival and stealth are valued above mindless shooting. Exploring the ruins of Moscow promises to become even more immersive — the authors rely on an “unsurpassed level of immersion” and a fascinating, albeit deadly aesthetic.

The script is based on Dmitry Glukhovsky’s trilogy, which guarantees a powerful literary base. It seems that the conflict between the Hunter and the Stranger will become the central axis of the story, in which personal dramas will be intertwined with the big politics of underground stations. A coincidence? Hardly — 4A Games have always been able to have an acute social connotation. Will we have time to prepare for April 16? We’ll find out soon enough.
