Avalanche Software Studio is officially assembling a separate team to create an online role—playing game – apparently, Hogwarts Legacy 2 will receive a large-scale online mode. The insider came directly from executive producer Travis Day, who confirmed the expansion of staff through his LinkedIn profile. Given the phenomenal circulation of the first part — 40 million copies sold — the developers expect to aim for a service model. And yes, the next major project in the Harry Potter universe will be radically different from its predecessor.

Hogwarts Legacy 2 multiplayer based on the GTA Online model

Hogwarts castle multiplayer concept

It’s too early to bury a single-player campaign. The formation of a new online division within Avalanche Software is, apparently, preparation for the parallel development of two formats. The audience is already drawing analogies with Rockstar’s approaches — a scheme with a deep history of the GTA V level and an endless multiplayer sandbox of the GTA Online format suggests itself.

It’s not difficult to understand the publisher. Sales of 40 million copies are a solid argument to give gamers what they’ve been asking for since the release of the original — the opportunity to legally explore Hogwarts with friends.

Fan Reaction to Hogwarts Legacy 2 Online Mode

Controversies were expected to break out on the Reddit platform, the main platform for fan discussions. The local community instantly split in two. The first half is terrified of the transformation of the lamp role—playing game into a soulless grinder – with mandatory loot boxes, season passes and paid skins. The second part of the players, on the contrary, is absolutely delighted — these people have been begging for years to add MMO sandbox elements to the game.

One of the Reddit regulars provided perhaps the most accurate analysis of the current situation: if the authors simply stretch the multiplayer onto the already tested singleplayer engine, commercial success is guaranteed. Fans literally dream of a full-fledged online romp in the taverns of Hogsmeade and joint trips to the Forbidden Forest. The creators will be able to repeat at least a small fraction of the triumph of the very GTA Online — the audience will sweep away the project without looking. The main thing is that ambitions don’t kill the magical atmosphere.

However, you won’t be satisfied with hopes alone — real skepticism in the community is growing in proportion to the prospects of Avalanche Software.

Battle passes and donations in Hogwarts Legacy 2 — what players are afraid of

The degree of discussion is off the charts: a significant part of the players are horrified by the very concept of an online RPG in the world of “Harry Potter”. Many have not yet moved away from the experience with Harry Potter: Magic Awakened — the project has clearly shown how quickly a unique magical adventure turns into a dull routine with endless farming. There is a serious fear that instead of a deep dive into ENT, we will get a pipeline of similar activities that kill replayability. Since the approximate release dates for Hogwarts Legacy 2 have already been confirmed, fans have plenty to worry about.

Gotham Knights Mistakes and Co-op Risks for Hogwarts Legacy 2

The history of the industry knows many examples when an attempt to sit on two brooms ended in disaster. Think of Gotham Knights, a strange hybrid of single—player action and co-op, where enemies turned into “damage sponges” and missions were repeated ad nauseam. A game that was originally honed under the network, but tried to seem like a singleplayer, is a dead end. Although, to be fair, any expansion of content for Hogwarts Legacy should theoretically benefit. Reddit users draw direct parallels:

“This is exactly the same trouble as in Harry Potter: Magic Awakened. I sincerely love this game, but at the same time I hate it — a huge part of the content there is either disposable or tightly tied to multiplayer, which spoils the whole impression.”

What to expect from Avalanche Software and when will Hogwarts Legacy 2 be released?

Whatever the final product turns out to be, we want to believe that the developers will listen to the opinions of both sides. The ideal scenario for 2026 looks simple: Avalanche Software releases a full—fledged single—player sequel to Hogwarts Legacy and – as the icing on the cake – adds a free online mode. If the multiplayer arrives in the free DLC format, it will become a real “Expelliarmus” according to all the doubts of critics. We will be thrilled if the studio chooses this path, without forcing players to pay twice for magic.
