The creators of CyberMP have presented a new video demonstration of a mod that can transform Cyberpunk 2077 into a real RP sandbox. The release is scheduled for 2026.

Currently, the cybermp mod is being tested in a closed format — only participants in paid alpha testing with a limited number of seats receive access.

What is already working in network mode

The current version of the fan project includes:

  • Player synchronization progress has reached almost a benchmark level — the characters move smoothly, without noticeable delays;
  • PvP battles are functioning stably, hits are registered correctly.;
  • The cooperative game supports the simultaneous presence of up to 20 users in one session.
  • The gameplay of the multiplayer mod shows minimal network code bugs, which is rare for independent developments of this scale.

Enthusiasts plans for the development of the project

Modders intend to expand the possibilities:

  • increase the number of participants to 1000+ people in the open world of co-op;
  • implement full-fledged cyberpunk rp servers with custom rules and roles;
  • Create tools to create a live cyberpunk sandbox where players can organize their own events.

In fact, it’s like GTA Online, but with a Cyberpunk 2077 entourage. Forget about the plot, just hang out in Night City with your friends and do whatever you want. A multiplayer action game for those who want to drive around a cyberpunk city together.

Current project status

CyberMP has been created since 2020. The first builds were alpha-tested by an enthusiast, and it was after him that the team rewrote several network code systems — because of this, there were fewer lags in the shootings and the sudden character jumps disappeared.

When the mod is opened to everyone, silence for now. Judging by the developers’ comments, they want to first reduce rare bugs in the network code and put the mechanics of the open world in order so that locations respond correctly to the actions of several dozen players at once.

The history of fan multiplayer creation: from idea to test

The development of the cybermp mod started in 2020, at the same time when the game itself was released in a problematic technical condition. CD Projekt RED abandoned the online mode after the game was unsuccessful. As a result, the developers took measures that the best option would be to fix the bugs in the single-player game. The studio wanted to make its own online game, but had to choose: either fix Cyberpunk 2077, or contribute more money to the multiplayer treasury.

It was this failure of cdpr multiplayer that provoked enthusiasts to get down to business. Initially, the project was handled by one modder under the nickname S1nger, who wanted to give the community something that the official studio refused. In short, by August 2024, the game from the fans was already in full alpha testing. It’s currently in closed beta, and you can get in if you contact the developers on Patreon.

In terms of timing, it’s like this: from 2020 to 2023, we were preparing – we were picking at the REDengine 4 engine, figuring out how to synchronize everything, and trying the network code by tooth. In 2024, the team demonstrated a working prototype with support for up to 20 players simultaneously, where the basic PvP mechanics and Night City exploration were already functioning. The modders have devoted the current year 2025 to optimization — removing bugs in the network code, improving the synchronization of animations of characters and transport.

The project uses the red4ext library, which allows for deep integration into the game system. By the way, Cyberpunk 2077 was not originally planned for multiplayer. Based on this, CDPR is now making new games on Unreal Engine 5. Cyberpunk fans have to essentially redesign the game so that it can be played online.

When to expect a public launch

The exact release date for Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer has not yet been announced. The CyberMP team is focusing on polishing synchronization between users and adding new mechanics. The priority is a full—fledged exploration of the open world and joint completion of tasks, which will turn the mod into a platform for long-term pastime.

At the same time, they recall the studio itself: CD Projekt RED recently released a financial report for the third quarter of 2025. In addition, it became known that the future Cyberpunk 2 is being created together with the author of the original universe — and in one of the January interviews with Reuters, executives Adam Badovsky and Michal Novakovsky said they were not closing the doors to the appearance of an online mode already in the sequel.

Technical features of the mod: synchronization, mods and performance

When you look at the technique of the Cyberpunk mod, you begin to better understand why the CyberMP team is moving forward so cautiously. The main difficulty is the synchronization of multiplayer events, especially when dozens of players intersect in one scene. The developers tried several approaches to the network code and eventually set up a system that checks actions locally, and only then sends them to other participants. Due to this, sudden jumps in the model and strange delays in combat moments disappear.

A separate topic is support for CP2077 mods. Many players have their own set of modifications, and CyberMP tries to take such cases into account so that the custom build does not break the network mode. The developers say that they do not recommend adding overly powerful graphics mods to the game, otherwise online will slow down, especially in areas with a high density of players.

We’re still trying to make the game better: we’re checking how data is being transmitted now, we’re looking at what we can do with the cache, and we want FPS to stay low even on not very powerful computers.
