The game’s signature mechanics are somersault. With it, you can jump over chasms, evade attacks, and even fly through bullets, dodging at the last moment. And if the situation gets out of control, there is always a “dummy” – a special technique that instantly stops enemy fire and gives the player a chance to catch his breath.

There is a merchant’s shop waiting for you on each level. It is here that you can buy first-aid kits, rare weapons, additional “pacifiers” and other useful items for the collected cartridges. Keys sold from a merchant unlock chests with valuable rewards.: These can be new machine guns, items that increase luck or health, and sometimes bonuses that enhance ammo. Each find changes the style of the game and opens up new tactics of passing.

And although over time you will become stronger and find more and more powerful weapons, Enter the Gungeon never lets you relax. Every room and every boss requires concentration, because even one wrong move can cost you the whole attempt.

In Enter the Gungeon, a weapon is not just a tool, but a real symbol of the game. The developers approached the arsenal with a fantasy: here you can find something similar to a submachine gun that shoots the letters BULLET, which turn into a comic “BANG” when hit by an enemy. There is also a cannon with balls bouncing off the walls, and among the rare finds there is even a Jim Worm blaster — a small gift for old-school players.

The opponents are no less diverse: many resemble animated cartridges, but each has its own style of attack. Some fire bullets that form words, while others cunningly turn the projectiles back after a few seconds. This makes every shootout feel like a mini-performance.

Almost all objects on the levels are destructible: barrels, boxes, pots, and even bookcases turn into rubble after a couple of shots, and the pages scatter around the room, creating a sense of chaos. Despite the fact that the bullets of the enemies fly slowly, and the hero has to recharge regularly, the shootouts look spectacular and intense. But once you encounter a boss, the rhythm changes dramatically: a huge supply of lives, a barrage of attacks and a lack of indulgences force the player to give his best.

However, this is where the main disadvantage of the game is its unbalanced complexity. Some enemies are so strong that their attacks are almost impossible to predict, and defeat often feels unfair. Going further than the third or fourth floor is a serious challenge, and the bonuses found almost do not save the situation. Unlike The Binding of Isaac, where each upgrade significantly changed the character’s abilities, in Enter the Gungeon many passive items from the chests look useless. Weapons are also not always pleasing: weak copies only get in the way, and powerful ones have to be saved for the sake of boss battles — ammunition is too limited, and there is almost nowhere to replenish it.

Because of this, comparisons with Isaac are not entirely appropriate. There, the player felt their strength increase with each new floor, even if they had no luck with keys or chests. Defeating the boss always brought tangible rewards, which allowed tactics to be rebuilt. In the Gungeon, you almost don’t feel any progress: the game gives you something, but it rarely affects the outcome.

Let’s add another unpleasant point here — the lack of resources. Keys and shell casings rarely fall out, and prices in stores rise from floor to floor. Chests are common, but it’s almost impossible to open them. First-aid kits are also available in scanty quantities, so you don’t have to rely on the help of the game.

As a result, Enter the Gungeon is a bright, stylish and charismatic roguelike game that impresses with an arsenal and spectacular battles, but often puts the player in a dead end due to excessive randomness and imbalance.

Enter the Gungeon is so addictive that time seems to melt away. Despite its obvious flaws, it’s incredibly hard to put down. Vibrant gunplay, a fun cartoonish visual style, and a charismatic atmosphere make the game truly captivating—on par with the cult classic The Binding of Isaac. Of course, Isaac still holds the title of the genre’s greatest hit, though some players would argue with that. But does that prevent another worthy roguelike from emerging? The only thing that spoils the experience is the capricious randomness and the not always fair distribution of bonuses, which require further refinement.
