The Metroidvania genre has long been a favorite platform for independent developers. It all began back in 2004 with the legendary Cave Story, which demonstrated that 2D platformers with elements of free exploration and character development could be true works of art. Since then, a steady stream of exciting projects has continued: the world recently saw Rogue Legacy, and a little earlier, Drinkbox Studios made its mark, deciding to test its mettle in this challenging genre. The result was the vibrant and distinctive Guacamelee, which first captivated PS3 and PS Vita owners, garnering rave reviews, and then made its way to PC in an expanded Gold Edition, featuring additional costumes and new achievements.
The plot of Guacamelee sounds like an explosive cocktail of video game classics and Mexican soap operas. A villain named Kalaka kidnaps the president’s daughter, and an ordinary farmer named Juan rushes to her aid. True, the hero dies early on, but it is precisely this death that gives him new strength. In the afterlife, he gains a magical mask that transforms him into a true luchador—a Mexican wrestler who can not only return to life, but also move freely between the world of the living and the realm of the dead.

Guacamelee! 2’s plot may not be the most intricate in video game history, but its atmosphere and presentation are captivating from the very first minute. Canadian studio Drinkbox Studios has created a true Mexican carnival—a world that blends vivid stereotypes, absurd humor, and an explosive visual style. At times, it feels like you’ve stepped into a wild version of Robert Rodriguez’s “Desperado”: musicians in sombreros, temperamental beauties, mustachioed bandits, and other colorful characters roam the landscape, endlessly joking, plotting, and scheming for world domination.

But it doesn’t stop there—the developers have liberally peppered the game with pop culture references. There’s the Me Gusta meme, allusions to Super Mario Bros., and even tiny Minecraft-inspired Easter eggs. Each of these details might seem banal on its own, but together they create an incredibly fresh and distinctive cocktail that comes to life thanks to stylish graphics and expressive animation.

Gameplay mechanics: linearity with a sense of freedom
At its core, Guacamelee! 2 follows the genre’s traditions. The map always shows the way, so it’s impossible to get lost or lose a key skill. But this doesn’t turn the game into a “railroad ride”: the world still encourages exploration. A chest with gold, health, or a rare bonus might be lurking around a corner. And later, Juan even gains the ability to transform into a rooster to navigate narrow tunnels in search of secrets.
However, the true heart of the game is, of course, the fights. Luchador Juan doesn’t just swing his fists—he wields a whole arsenal of punches and throws. Fights resemble a frantic dance: you knock out a skeleton with one blow, immediately hurl it at a nearby enemy, roll to avoid a third attack, send it flying with an uppercut, jump after it, finish off the combo, and finally unleash a powerful blow. All this happens in a matter of seconds and is so spectacular that it’s hard to tear yourself away.

As the hero grows, so does the range of available moves. Some are unlocked through the story, while others can be purchased in special shops. There, Juan also tries on new costumes that not only change his appearance but also affect his stats—for example, they increase his attacks but decrease his health.
The developers haven’t forgotten about the enemies either. While at first you only encounter skeletons, much more dangerous foes soon appear: heavily armed armadillos, dragons, aggressive plants, and even living bombs. Each requires a unique approach, and some have defenses that can only be broken with specific moves. As a result, Guacamelee! 2 turns battles into a true test of reaction speed and tactical thinking. You need to be able to instantly prioritize, adapt to new conditions, and maintain concentration without losing focus for a second.
Guacamelee! and Difficulty Balance
At first, Guacamelee! 2 gently introduces new challenges, as if giving you time to get used to the pace. But at some point, the game suddenly crosses a line. Halfway through the story, Juan gains the ability to move independently between the worlds of the living and the dead, and that’s when the developers at Drinkbox seem to lose all sense of proportion. Jumping puzzles become a real test of nerves: you have to string together entire combinations of moves on the fly, and the slightest mistake ruins everything. But the real nightmare begins in the battles.

Enemies also exist in both dimensions, and if you’re stuck in one and an enemy is in the other, they become a ghostly silhouette that can’t be hit but continues to strike you without mercy. Add to this the different types of shields and enemies that deal damage regardless of your position, and chaos ensues. At this point, you’re no longer fighting; you’re frantically pressing buttons, confused, and unsure what to grab first. Perhaps this is precisely the effect the developers were going for—a sense of overload and desperate struggle—but it’s hardly enjoyable.
Guacamelee! had the potential to become a benchmark Metroidvania. With its vibrant visual style, signature humor, and lively fights, the game managed to be simultaneously familiar and surprisingly fresh. But its Mexican temperament takes over: at a certain point, Guacamelee! seems to break free and unleash all its tricks on the player at once. Instead of enjoyment, confusion sets in, and instead of drive, fatigue.
