The developers haven’t forgotten about the enemies either. While at first you only encounter skeletons, much more dangerous foes soon appear: heavily armed armadillos, dragons, aggressive plants, and even living bombs. At this point, you’re no longer fighting; you’re frantically pressing buttons, confused, and unsure what to grab first. Perhaps this is precisely the effect the developers were going for—a sense of overload and desperate struggle—but it’s hardly enjoyable.

Guacamelee! had the potential to become a benchmark Metroidvania. With its vibrant visual style, signature humor, and lively fights, the game managed to be simultaneously familiar and surprisingly fresh. But its Mexican temperament takes over: at a certain point, Guacamelee! seems to break free and unleash all its tricks on the player at once.
