Unlike many of their colleagues, they openly call their work not just games, but audiovisual art and design. This approach makes their projects long in production, but the result is always special and recognizable. In 2011, they gave the world Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP — a project that quickly acquired cult status and became the standard of “games as art”. Two years later, Capybara Games took on a more practical genre and announced work on Below. This time, they decided to apply the principles of audiovisual art to a survival game built on roguelike mechanics. For the studio, this was a challenge: the development process stretched out, sometimes turning into a test. But five years later the game finally saw the light of day – and it was the first Capybara Games project that not only evoked delight and praise from the audience, but also a desire to critically look at the result.

Knowing these authors, it was hard to expect something ordinary. Their new project captivates you from the very first minutes with an atmosphere that any film director would envy. Imagine: for several minutes of real time, the camera slowly glides through heavy leaden clouds, accompanied by a mesmerizing ambient, where soft electronic notes mix with the noise of waves, rain and distant peals of thunder. Below, in the middle of the endless black ocean, there is a tiny sailboat. It eventually washes up on the shore of an unknown island, and a small figure with a sword in her hands steps onto the sand.
This laconic but profound scene contains meaning: we are just a grain of sand that finds itself in the middle of an abyss of dangers. Under the roar of a thunderstorm, a tiny hero runs along the wet shore, through thickets of tall grass. There is no one around, only stone steps leading up to a giant rock, gloomy towers of black stone, circles flashing in lightning bursts, similar to ritual symbols. In the center is a strange lantern resting on a pedestal. Why is it here? Why are we destined to lift it? And why, as soon as you touch this lamp, the space is pierced by alarming beeps, as if distant ships – lost either at sea or in space – are sending their last distress signals? There are no answers.

One thing is clear: ahead of us is a survival story, presented through dark expressionism. Here, not only the action is important, but also the mood – tragic, dark, almost gothic. From the first minutes, the game gives a feeling of anxious anticipation, a mystery that is simultaneously frightening and attractive. The developers deliberately made the camera detached and minimized the training. All that is left for the player to do is figure out how to survive in this harsh and dangerous world, where every little thing reminds you that you are just a small part in a huge mystery.

Crafting system in Below
In general, the rules of survival here are simple. As soon as you step into the gloomy tower of black stone, you understand that there will be no easy walk. Floor after floor, we descend deeper and deeper, encounter monsters, collect rare resources and from time to time rest by fires, which are extremely rare. Fights do not forgive mistakes: one wrong move – and the enemy knocks down the hero with just a couple of blows. You have to learn to dodge, put blocks in time and look for the enemy’s weak spots. It’s funny, but there is no usual stamina scale here – you can fight as much as you like, as long as you are alive.
Each victory brings loot – crystals that feed our magic lamp. Without it, you can’t take a step into the dungeon: it is with the light of the lamp that we open mechanisms, find keys, activate doors and make our way further. Sometimes the glow even scares off enemies, which makes it much more reliable than an ordinary torch, which goes out at the most inopportune moment.

Along the way, you have to collect everything: herbs, roots, stones, bread crusts, sticks and ropes. You can even cut out the entrails from the bodies of your enemies – not the most pleasant activity, but useful. You can easily cook soup from this junk at a campfire, which will satiate, quench your thirst and restore your health. You can make simple food, a healing patch or try to combine ingredients to get something unusual. There are no clear recipes here, the game only hints at which components go well together. The rest is your own experiments.
So gradually new opportunities open up: the hero suddenly starts fishing or hunting forest animals that peacefully wander nearby. And you can also quench your thirst directly from cave puddles – however, at your own risk.
But as soon as you relax, the game instantly reminds you where you are. You run joyfully along a dark corridor, see something red on the ground, think: “Oh, prey!” – and immediately fall into a trap, leaving your body on sharp stakes. Everything starts over again: a small boat floats to the shore of the island, and the path repeats itself. Only now another meeting with the previous place of death awaits ahead, where you can pick up lost things and, most importantly, return the magic lamp.
Hardcore mechanics Below
In Below, you will have to die more often than you would like. Death here is not an accident, but a part of the gameplay. And every time you start over, you feel a slight irritation, because the path to the goal again lies through familiar corridors. Yes, over time you can accumulate enough crystals and turn the fire into a respawn point to shorten the road at least once. Sometimes open “shortcuts” help, allowing you to quickly return to the place of death. But even with this, there is still too much running back and forth, and it is tiring.
The game does not strive to be friendly. Below is a harsh, cold “survivalist” that requires the player to be extremely attentive. It does not forgive mistakes. At first, you encounter simple enemies, but gradually they are replaced by more dangerous opponents – mechanical guards, massive golems, and then “bosses”, with whom each fight turns into a test. Traps become more cunning, camouflaged in the landscape so that it is not always possible to notice them. And on snowy levels, you have to watch not only your health, but also your temperature, otherwise the hero will simply freeze.

Over time, resources literally begin to disappear. The deeper you go, the less food there is, and this can kill no worse than any enemy. Sometimes it seems that the game itself is throwing you emptiness instead of prey. The situation can only be saved by a reserve left in advance in your personal storage, where the hero is transferred after resting by the fire.
But sometimes it feels like the developers have overdone it with harshness. The atmosphere of gloomy exploration and careful immersion into the unknown is shattered by a harsh routine. When your pockets are empty, your stomach is cramping from hunger, the fire is still far away, and enemies are attacking from all sides, you no longer think about the beauty of underground locations. Everything comes down to one thing: run like hell, just to make it to the next fire.

Despite the deliberate severity and almost complete lack of clues, Below has become a rare survival game for me that I really wanted to finish. It has a special magic: a thick atmosphere, mystery and beauty that manifests itself even in the darkest locations. Gradually, an irresistible desire arises to find out the answers – what kind of Darkness is reaching out to the hero, why stone pedestals and towers were erected, and where this path will lead.

Capybara Games managed to combine familiar mechanics with a unique presentation, creating a game that feels fresh and original. Even if the balance seems overly rigid somewhere, Below still remains a powerful audiovisual statement.
