But the first hours in Hollow Knight: Silksong make it clear that we have before us not just a sequel, but a truly special game.

She manages to break free, but freedom is only the beginning. The journey to Hollow Knight: Silksong feels much more intense from the very first minutes than in the original. This already resembles the classic boosts from Metroid. It is amazing that such a useful and multifaceted skill is available so early, and one can only guess what the developers will surprise with next.

But Hornet has to pay for her speed and maneuverability. The developers made the enemies more aggressive and smarter. If in Hollow Knight the first opponents were more of a training session, then here at the start you encounter opponents more similar to the later enemies of the original. They jump, attack in mid-air, throw projectiles and force you to keep your distance at all times. Bosses, however, demonstrate a serious set of techniques from the very beginning and punish painfully: one wrong move can cost you several health masks at once.

The new healing system plays a special role in creating tension. In the original, you could replenish one mask by spending some energy. In Silksong, Hornet restores three at once, but only if her gauge is fully charged. This creates an interesting balance: while you have no energy, each fight turns into a game of survival, but as soon as the bar is filled, you can instantly remove a huge burden from your shoulders and continue the fight with renewed vigor.

The financial system has also changed slightly. Now, instead of Geo, the heroine collects rose beads, which are lost upon death. But at the same time, Hornet still has shell fragments – a special resource that drops from enemies and is used to charge tools, such as throwing knives. This adds another layer of tactics: you need to not only fight and survive, but also keep an eye on your supplies so that you don’t run out of key capabilities at the right moment.

And if you look deeper, the idea itself greatly enriches the lore. For the residents of Farlum, Hornet’s help looks like a manifestation of higher powers, as if their prayers were really answered.

Overall, Hollow Knight: Silksong feels like a work according to the “bigger and better” formula. However, there are also some controversial points:

• too many checkpoints in the starting zones – this reduces the tension that once made each sortie special;
• the initial linearity of the levels – it is impossible to get lost in the first hours, which is in sharp contrast to the original.

However, these are not necessarily disadvantages. Perhaps the authors deliberately simplified the first steps so that beginners do not abandon the game, as often happened with the first part. It is possible that real variability and a sense of freedom will be revealed later.

Be that as it may, Silksong instantly captivates. I caught myself sitting at it all night, and the next day my thoughts returned to the game again. This is, perhaps, the main sign of real magic.
