The Star Wars saga has been a part of pop culture for many decades, and its influence has long gone beyond the movie screen. It has reached not only the shelves with toys and souvenirs, but has also firmly established itself in the gaming industry. The first steps in this direction began in the 90s, when games based on Star Wars were released in the format of 8- and 16-bit platformers and dynamic action games. Over time, technology developed, and by 2004-2005, not just arcades, but full-fledged first-person shooters were already appearing on the shelves. There were even fighting games based on Star Wars – a rarity by today’s standards. But one of those games that was especially loved by fans was the legendary shooter Star Wars: Battlefront 2.

The game was released in 2005, simultaneously on consoles and PC. It was developed by Pandemic Studios, and it is not a banal shooter retelling the plot of the Star Wars films. The main emphasis here is on large-scale online battles between players, although fans of single-player play are not left without attention. The game has a full-fledged campaign with bots, telling the story of the formation of the legendary Galactic Empire and covering the key events of the cinematic universe. The Galactic Conquest mode, as well as quick battles, where you choose your own faction, map and battle format, complete the picture.

The gameplay feels very similar to Battlefield 2, only with a Star Wars setting. The same types of missions, similar battle dynamics and huge battlefields – but with your favorite heroes, equipment and locations of a galaxy far, far away. For me personally, as a fan of Battlefield 2, this is a huge plus. Moreover, unlike the “battle”, here the hit registration system works clearly, and the bots behave smarter, which makes the single-player mode more interesting. And, of course, the multiplayer scene is still alive – fans continue to fight online after years.

The events are centered on large-scale battles between the stormtroopers of the Empire, the rebels and other iconic factions, including the droid army. Having earned enough points for the battle, you will be able – unlike the first part – to control iconic characters: Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader or even Darth Sidious himself. The modes are varied: capture the flag, conquest, hunt, capture the holocron, as well as space battles on starships. There is also a special “Assault” mode, where only legendary heroes fight, but, unfortunately, it is available only on one map.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 Classic’s Biggest Flaws and Missed Opportunities

As I mentioned earlier, this game has its drawbacks, and the first of them is the extremely quick “knockout” of popular heroes. Want, for example, to run for Obi-Wan Kenobi or Darth Maul? Do not count on a long fight – you will quickly be sent to the hangar, and you will have to save up points again to return to your favorite character for at least a couple of minutes. This, of course, is a shame: who wants to play for faceless ordinary soldiers when there are cult heroes of the Star Wars universe in the arsenal? As a result, many either go around – they put cheats, or launch the assault mode on special maps, where you can arrange duels between legendary characters. Even easier – download a modification that allows you to spend the entire game in the role of Jedi, Sith and other iconic heroes of the saga.

The second problem is also related to the characters. Some popular heroes, like Princess Leia, Boba Fett or Han Solo, are essentially slightly modified copies of regular stormtroopers. The only difference is in the model, voice acting and weapons – Leia and Han’s pistol shoots so powerfully that it can kill with one shot. However, Boba has an advantage – he can fly with a jetpack. Chewbacca is no exception: in fact, he is the same stormtrooper, only with a rifle that works like a shotgun. It would be much more interesting if the developers came up with a unique set of abilities for each hero:

• Leia could use a standard blaster with an emphasis on rate of fire.
• Han Solo – shoot with both hands at once, which would make him dangerous at medium range.
• Boba Fett – in addition to the jetpack, would have special missiles for an area attack.
• Chewbacca – would have a powerful energy crossbow with an alternative firing mode.

But, alas, it turned out that way.

Otherwise, the game leaves a very pleasant impression. I spent a lot of hours in it and was satisfied. I would like to tell you more about it, but the game itself is not that great in content. Yes, it is about the level of Battlefield 2, but there are few objects for deep analysis here. Nevertheless, I repeat – this is an excellent game that is still alive and continues to be played. Therefore, I can safely recommend it to everyone who has not yet had time to get acquainted with this masterpiece. And yes, if anyone is not aware, after the release of the remake from EA, the 2005 version is now officially called Star Wars Battlefront 2 Classic.
