If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be a wolf, hunt in the mountains, survive in the wild, and look for a mate, then WolfQuest is definitely worth a try. This game was not created for profit, but by order of an environmental organization dedicated to protecting wolves around the world. That’s why it’s absolutely free. Of course, in terms of graphics and mechanics, this is not a AAA-class masterpiece, but it has a soul – and that’s what’s catchy.
I myself couldn’t resist trying to play – and was pleasantly surprised. So I’m sharing my impressions and some tips that will help you get used to it faster. First, you create your wolf: come up with a name, choose a color, determine the appearance. And then – forward, into the open world. Vast plains, forests, mountains, rivers and the whole life of a wild predator await you. You can hunt, run on tracks, communicate with other wolves, or just explore the surroundings.
The prey is varied: mainly hares, coyotes and deer. Moreover, deer have males, females and cubs, and this is important when hunting. There are also bears, but you won’t be able to meet them much — they are afraid of wolves and run away even faster than deer. A special feature of WolfQuest is “wolf vision”. In this mode, the world becomes black and white, and all smells become colored balls. Coming closer, you can find out what animal has passed here recently and for how long. This helps to track down the prey, especially if it is wounded — such animals move more slowly.

Sometimes you will meet other wolves. And then the “conversation” begins — you choose lines, and in response you hear short phrases from the interlocutor. All this is rather conditional, but it gives the feeling of real wolf communication. If you are lucky, you can make friends, and maybe even find a mate. True, such parameters as the age of the wolves, their strength, endurance and even color are important for this. And if loneliness in the wild is not for you – welcome to the multiplayer! There you can unite with other players from all over the world: hunt together, explore the territory or just chat. True, the servers are designed for a maximum of five people – the game can’t handle more for now.
WolfQuest is not just entertainment. It is an opportunity to look at nature through the eyes of a predator and feel how the world works outside the comfort of city life. A free, soulful and unusual simulator that is worth trying at least once.

Is WolfQuest worth playing?
I played a little in single player mode — wandered around the expanses, tried to create a pack. It’s difficult, but doable: it didn’t work the first time, but with a hint from the guide, everything became clearer. I hunted, tried to start a wolf family — and then the difficulties began. It turned out that it’s not easy to find a partner: both your wolf must approach, and the virtual she-wolf is not always ready for rapprochement. However, this even has its own charm — realistically, like in life.
Animals in the game behave differently. Deer and bears run away when they see you, but hunting for hares and coyotes seemed too easy — not enough interest.

Out of curiosity, I looked into multiplayer. Unexpectedly, most of the players are girls. There was no serious survival there: four wolves just stood nearby and chatted about something of their own. Touching, but clearly not for those who were expecting real fights for territory.
Pros of the game:
-
Original idea – a wolf life simulator is rare.
-
Free – no need to spend money to try it.
-
Not demanding on hardware – will run even on a weak PC.
-
Clear interface – even a beginner does not need detailed instructions.
Cons of the game:
-
Sometimes it gets boring – not enough dynamics.
-
I would like more variety of game and difficult opponents.
-
The graphics could be more modern and rich.
-
There are not enough wolves on the map – the world feels empty.
