But if in Valhalla we mixed alcoholic cocktails, then in the cozy atmosphere of Coffee Talk from the Indonesian studio Toge Productions you will find exclusively non-alcoholic drinks. Here you are not a bartender in a gloomy cyberpunk bar, but a barista in a soulful coffee shop, where customers share their stories with the aroma of tea, coffee and cocoa.
At first glance, it may seem that this is the same VA-11 Hall-A, just in a new wrapper – the menu has been updated, alcohol has been crossed out. But if you dig deeper, there will be many more differences. It seems that the team from Toge Productions carefully looked at what did not work perfectly in Valhalla, and tried to make their version warm, humane and more complete. Before us is an unusual Seattle – among the familiar skyscrapers and the recognizable Space Needle, vampires, mermaids, werewolves and even succubi live side by side with people. And in ordinary conversations, Sting’s song Englishman In New York pops up, or some familiar brands and phenomena, as if from a parallel reality.
According to the game’s lore, these races were once at odds, but now it’s 2020 – and instead of war, we have startups from elves, business empires from dwarves and orc programmers at their laptops. Comparisons with VA-11 Hall-A are obvious — both stories revolve around communicating with customers and are divided into separate shifts. However, Coffee Talk gives you a little more freedom: there is a convenient calendar that allows you to return to previous days. Before the start of each evening, the game shows you the latest issue of the newspaper, which flashes news that gives you an idea of what’s going on outside the coffee shop. But the main thing, of course, happens inside: the stories that the characters share are the heart of this world.

How Coffee Talk Combines Storytelling and Drink-Making Mechanics
In Coffee Talk, you are not just a barista, but rather an attentive interlocutor, a silent witness to other people’s stories. The main character has neither a face nor a name – only your imagination. You decide what to call him and how he behaves. Sometimes regulars of the coffee shop make orders, and your task is to prepare exactly the drink they described. But if you suddenly make a mistake – no problem. The guest may grumble a little, but the plot will continue to develop, as if nothing terrible had happened. In one of the playthroughs, I even decided to play the absent-minded barista and deliberately mixed up the ingredients, but the final scenes remained the same.
In most cases, the recipes are simple and clear. But sometimes customers ask for something unusual – and then there is scope for imagination. Many drinks in the game are inspired by real recipes, so personal knowledge of coffee, tea and cocoa may well come in handy. The more you understand drinks, the easier it will be to guess the wishes of guests. Each drink consists of three components. Everything affects the taste: honey makes it sweeter, ginger adds spiciness and a warming aftertaste, mint adds freshness. But it’s not just the ingredients themselves, their order is also important. For example, to brew a Lemony Snippet, you need to take milk, then add honey, and then lemon. Swap the lemon and honey, and instead of the signature drink you’ll just get lemon-honey milk, which won’t even make it into the recipe list.

The unusual recipes you find are saved on the barista’s phone. There you can also turn on relaxing lo-fi, read Freya’s short stories, or look at the profiles of regular guests. All recipes are unlocked gradually, through trial and error – this is exactly the element of gameplay that was so lacking, say, in VA-11 Hall-A. If you feel that the experiment has gone wrong, you can always throw the drink away and try again – you have five such attempts within one shift.
The endless mode is useful for training and opening all the drinks. This is where you start to feel how tedious it is to select the right sequence, especially when there are only a few recipes left to complete the collection. But, fortunately, no one forces you to do this. All drinks are required only for the challenge mode, where you have to cook according to a timer and without the right to make a mistake. Interestingly, there is no money at all in Coffee Talk. All drinks cost the same, you don’t have to pay rent, and there is no motivation in the form of purchases to “enhance” the barista. However, no enhancements are required: the wishes of visitors are always written right on the preparation screen – you just need to be attentive.

Although the characters in Coffee Talk are fantasy creatures of all stripes, like elves, vampires, werewolves, and succubi, they don’t talk about magic, battles, and ancient clans. They are concerned with surprisingly familiar, everyday problems in which it’s easy to recognize yourself or someone close to you. One character is a caring father who can’t come to terms with the fact that his daughter is growing up, becoming independent, and popular. Another story is about a couple of lovers from different races whose parents are against their marriage, as often happens in real life. And then there’s the writer, incredibly talented, but chronically prone to procrastination — she rushes between inspiration and laziness, like many creative people.
Such stories accompany every visit to the coffee shop, creating the feeling that you’re not in a game, but in a real place, where real people with real concerns gather at the bar. At the same time, the game doesn’t go into unnecessary drama. It rather outlines themes than goes into them. For example, a local game developer is a typical workaholic. She doesn’t realize how much she needs a break and how harmful it is to constantly ignore rest. A war veteran, on the other side of the counter, shares his experience of adapting to life after service — and again, without any emotion, without pathos. Simply, humanly. Even such complex topics as viral epidemics, illegal immigration or aggressive fans of celebrities are touched upon in Coffee Talk not for the sake of loud headlines, but as part of everyday life — somewhere in the background, naturally and unobtrusively.
What distinguishes Coffee Talk from other visual novels is its unobtrusiveness and coziness. The player is given the role of a barista — a listener and mediator, but not a hero who changes everything. Unlike the same VA-11 Hall-A, here we have almost no freedom to influence the plot or interfere with the dialogues. Sometimes you want to be able to somehow react to the words of the guests – to insert a phrase, change the tone, show initiative. But the developers from Toge Productions have focused on observation, not participation. Their goal is not an interactive drama, but a soft, warm slice of life, where you simply watch how stories unfold before your eyes.

And it must be admitted, they succeeded. Conversations in the game sound natural – without cliches and template lines. The characters joke, tease each other, tease, flirt, get angry, share thoughts – and all this is so lively and authentic that sometimes you begin to forget that in front of you are not real people, but a set of pixels and text. The atmosphere of the conversation is such that you involuntarily smile – as if you found yourself in that very warm and cozy place where it is pleasant to drop in after a hard day. However, so far, there is no official Russian localization of the game. All dialogues are in English, but the developers have already confirmed that they are working on the translation. So it’s only a matter of time – localization will definitely appear, you just need to wait a little.
And we can’t help but mention the visual design, which makes you fall in love with it at first sight. If you appreciate pixel art, then Coffee Talk is just your game. The interior of the coffee shop is made with incredible attention to detail: cozy light, warm colors, raindrops dripping outside the window. Everything seems to breathe calm. It is especially pleasant to watch the process of preparing drinks – this is not just a function, but a small performance.
Another strong point is the facial expressions of the characters. Despite the fact that we are dealing with pixel graphics, the emotions of the characters are literally read at first glance. Joy, sadness, fatigue, irritation – all this is conveyed by faces and looks. It’s a small thing, but it’s these small things that create a lively atmosphere in which you want to stay for a long time.
