Ever since the Dark Lord vanished, evil has wandered the world like a lost soul. Sometimes it drops by a village, sets a cottage on fire, laughs at the burning, screaming people—then drifts on again, aimless and mournful. Without their proud and mighty master, the dark forces can’t snuff out anything wise, kind, or enduring. They’re like fleas without a dog, pimples without a face.
But rumor has it, the throne won’t stay empty much longer. In a quiet village, there’s a boy. Angry, sharp, restless. Fate has big plans for him…

The boy is often labeled a foundling, and there’s good reason for that. His eyes carry a striking resemblance to someone familiar, hinting that he might be the offspring of the Dark Lord from the first part of the saga. He possesses his father’s formidable powers and exhibits an equally harsh disposition. However, right now, no one is fully convinced that he is indeed the new harbinger of evil. For the moment, he remains just a child…

Remember Fable? In that captivating game, the hero developed under the player’s guidance from childhood, running around and playfully kicking chickens. This mischievous little lad is also a boy who takes pleasure in tormenting animals—not chickens, but rabbits. Instead of delivering kicks, he wields a club to pin them to the ground. But don’t make the mistake of thinking he’s a coward; he doesn’t bully animals out of insecurity. He’s quite adept at teaching his peers a lesson, showing that he has a knack for mischief. The story begins with an unexpected encounter between the Young Dark Lord and his restless opponents. They taunt us tirelessly, showering us with snowballs, and their mocking laughter rings in our ears like a ringing sound. But the limit of patience has long been passed! Grabbing a heavy log, we rally our friends – and together we rush at the offenders, giving vent to the accumulated anger. However, the joy of the counterattack is quickly overshadowed. The imperial legions roar through the streets of the village – threats of destruction sound in their voices if the magical creatures are not handed over. Without delay, the fearful residents hand over our hero to the soldiers, hoping that the sacrifice will pacify the Empire. And then, as if nothing had happened, they return to their festivities with relief.
When it seemed that the Dark Lord would not live to see adolescence, fate itself intervened. He manages to escape from captivity, but while escaping, he falls into an icy pond – the cold penetrates to the bones. And it is at this moment that mischievous devils pull him out of the water. They carry him to the castle, where their master, a powerful magician named Gnarl, gives the order: to wake the sleeping dragon and melt the ice, hoping to change the course of events in his favor…
Adolescence and youth
The boy was raised with a strong ideological foundation, instilling in him a rigid view of the world. Kind gestures caused a slight queasiness within him, while the notions of love and beauty brought on a painful throbbing in his head. As he matured into adulthood, it became crucial to verify if he truly was the Master they had hoped for. Had the demons mistakenly taken in a kind-hearted soul who bore an uncanny resemblance to the previous Lord? Now a young man, the hero embarks on his very first battle, filled with a mix of excitement and trepidation.

It all begins with a seemingly ordinary training mission, yet it stands out as one of the most remarkable of its kind. The demons guide us to a floating ice patch, where charming, fluffy seals with wide, expressive eyes reminiscent of characters from “Shrek” swim up to our group. They gaze at us with innocence, frolicking in the water and playfully catching fish. Suddenly, one of the minions clutches his chest in alarm, seizing a club in a fit of rage, and, shouting, “Poor little fish! Leave it alone, you scoundrel!” he charges at the unsuspecting creature. Meanwhile, Gnarl leans in to whisper that the seals appear to be gazing directly into our very souls—they must be eradicated at all costs…
An oil painting depicts a dark Lord clad in gleaming iron armor, wielding a massive, menacing axe as he relentlessly chases tiny seals. He attempts to slice them into pieces, surrounded by a dozen mischievous imps who cheer him on. These minions are having the time of their lives, hooting and sneering at the helpless creatures with gleeful abandon. This chaotic scene unfolds for about half an hour, filled with raucous laughter and the sound of clashing metal, until a group of elves arrives on a drifting ice floe. The developers have whimsically transformed these elves into nature-loving hippies, passionately devoted to preserving the environment. After we thoroughly defeat them and they realize they can’t save the animals, the chief elf shouts in frustration, “You’re just envious that your friends aren’t as fluffy!” Overall, I found it absolutely hilarious and laughed until tears streamed down my face, unable to contain my amusement at the absurdity of it all.
We will take over this world!
Once our reign as the Dark Lord is firmly established, the real adventure begins. Although the new missions are technically different, they are suspiciously reminiscent of the training we’ve already completed. But the missions aren’t the point – the real charm lies in the sparkling humor that permeates every element of this bizarre world. It seems as if the game was designed solely to make us laugh at the cliches, stereotypes, and painfully familiar tropes.
The entire Empire (which surprisingly resembles a cartoon version of Ancient Rome) is populated by a gallery of comical characters – from panic-mongers to insatiable gluttons. Even the centurion sports a belly so big that it almost drags on the ground, serving as a living symbol of the nation’s hedonism. Fairies are ridiculously plump creatures with a funny appearance, and elves are presented as eccentric eco-conservationists, constantly talking about nature. The line between light and darkness is almost erased – or, to be more precise, it hardly ever existed. Curiously, in many ways the Dark Lord seems much more reasonable and attractive than the so-called heroes who inhabit this satirical world.

It is impossible not to note that the humor and deliberate distortion of moral guidelines have been brought to perfection. It is obvious that over the years the writers have enriched their vision, thanks to which the plot has become much deeper and more sophisticated. Most of the lines are worth quoting: they are full of sarcasm, irony and unusual charm, which makes the passage especially fascinating.
This game invites players not only to laugh at the absurdity of what is happening, but also to consciously laugh at the very idea of a “heroic quest”. It is an exciting, self-deprecating adventure in a world that is not afraid to parody itself and encourages us to enjoy chaos and find joy in the unexpected.
Go, minions!
The gameplay has not changed dramatically, but it has become noticeably smoother and more enjoyable. The developers listened to the criticism that players expressed after the release of the first part, and got rid of many annoying and outdated elements that interfered with immersion. Despite this, the same gameplay scheme still lies at the core.
As before, we are followed by a motley crowd of energetic minions, adding drive and color to our adventures. These creatures rarely show initiative and, as a rule, patiently await our orders. Upon seeing an enemy, we only give them a short command – “attack!” – and they happily rush into battle. We can stay on the sidelines, watching how they resolve the conflict on their own.

There are two key ways to control these loyal companions. The first is to select a target and a series of left-clicks to send a stream of frantic assistants to the enemy. This method may seem inconvenient and tedious, especially if there are several opponents. The second method allows you to direct the entire group at once: by holding down both mouse buttons and moving the cursor, the minions will rush in the direction indicated. By moving them forward, we create a bright, chaotic scene where the swarm outpaces the Overlord, leaving a whirlwind of destruction and fun in its wake.
In addition to the standard servant controls, the developers introduced an intriguing new mechanic. Scattered throughout the levels are small, unassuming pillars that let you possess one of your minions. This opens the door to completely fresh gameplay dynamics. Each type of demon minion has its own unique abilities, and many missions are built around their specific strengths—offering a distinct experience compared to playing as the Dark Overlord. There’s even a full-fledged stealth mission where you control the nimble green minion, adding a surprising layer of strategy and tension.
All the King’s Men
Since we’re discussing minions, let’s consider who is under our control. All demons are categorized into four distinct types. The most prevalent are the brown ones. They thrive in close combat, ride formidable wolves, and eagerly don anything they can scavenge from the battlefield.
Next are the red demons. Fire doesn’t intimidate them; they can even unleash flames at will. They function like archer-mages, excelling from a distance and enabling us to bypass “hot” obstacles with ease, providing strategic advantages in challenging situations.
The third type is green. These elusive beings allow for thrilling stealth missions. They can move unseen, resist poisons, and are exceptionally skilled at ambushing foes from behind. With their abilities, levels can be approached in entirely different and creative ways, enhancing the gameplay experience.
Finally, we have the blue demons. They uniquely fear not water, allowing them to swim effortlessly, and they possess remarkable teleportation skills. This ability is often crucial for advancing through specific levels, making them invaluable allies in our quest.
Every demon can be resurrected—each one individually. This feature adds depth to the gameplay, as many Dark Lords develop attachments to their specific minions over time, forging bonds that influence their strategies and decisions throughout their journey.
So, yeah — these fine folks are the ones we’ll be spreading chaos and destruction with. And if you’re wondering why, well, the answer might surprise you: no real reason. Just because.
First, it’s all about revenge — going after the people who threw us to the wolves of the Empire. Then, the peasants start asking for this and that. Someone needs help where evil’s missing? We head there. Next thing you know, a mission calls for rescuing the blue guys, and down into a cave we go. It’s all very carefree adventuring, really. And at first, it’s fine — kind of fun, even. But around the halfway mark… you start to feel a bit worn out. And the question is — why?

Such a common rake
Gameplay devoid of narrative and humor feels incredibly mundane. While chasing demons can be exhilarating and throwing punches may bring a thrill, relying solely on these elements quickly leads to monotony. You often find yourself yearning for clever jokes or witty remarks from the minions, and every time a cutscene plays, it brings a smile to your face. The desire to race through the level and advance the story is strong, yet each mission turns out to be astonishingly vast and sprawling. These enormous environments force us to repeat the same actions time and again, which can become frustrating.
Monotony is undoubtedly the project’s biggest flaw. It seems the developers overlooked this critical aspect. They assumed that combat is just as engaging as listening to Gnar’s lengthy rants, but that’s far from the truth. After earning those blue tokens, the motivation to keep playing dwindles. Why would anyone want to continue? Everything becomes predictable, and we already have more than enough humor to keep us entertained for a while. The lack of variety makes it hard to stay invested in the game’s world, leading to a less fulfilling experience overall.
Overlord 2 shares a common flaw with Ghostbusters: the gameplay often feels like an afterthought, overshadowed by the richly crafted world. This is quite disappointing, as we invest countless hours into it. After a relentless forty minutes of battle, there’s rarely a witty remark to lighten the mood. Instead, it devolves into a repetitive cycle of mindless destruction.
While this issue may take time to notice, the game is anything but ordinary. The indirect control mechanic is a unique twist that sets it apart, yet the battles often overshadow the narrative. Even the most captivating missions can lose their charm when compared to the overall experience. Moreover, Overlord 2 has its share of glaring issues that can’t be overlooked.
Still, this game stands out as one of June’s most fascinating releases, making it a must-explore for fans of the original title and anyone who appreciates clever, nuanced humor. You might find yourself not completing Overlord 2, but the initial hours are genuinely deserving of high praise. I bow deeply to the talented writers who crafted its dialogue and scenarios… however, the game designers have let us down somewhat, leaving room for improvement in the overall experience. The potential is there, waiting to be fully realized.
Pros:
-
great humor,
-
very funny characters and again great humor.
Cons:
-
long levels;
-
monotonous tasks.
