Sometimes it seems that real miracles are long gone. But DiRT Rally, released two years ago, became the exception that breathed life into the long-forgotten hope of fans. For many years, fans of the good old Colin McRae Rally complained: their favorite series went in the direction of bright arcade shows, leaving realism and drive behind. But Codemasters took a risk and went against the trends – they created a harsh, honest rally simulator that is closer in spirit to the origins than to the latest parts. The experiment was a success, and although fears remained – what if they again slide into brilliant effects and simplified mechanics? And yes, there are changes: some things became simpler, somewhere they added a little “glamour”. But – and this is important – this is not a return to DiRT 3 with its crazy gymkhana and rally for the sake of riding. And this is definitely not a direct sequel to DiRT Rally. This is something separate. Its own. And, perhaps, in its own way, honest.

Everything that players loved about DiRT Rally is still there. In DiRT 4, rallying remains a real challenge, not a cozy stroll along wide tracks, as it was in the first parts of the series. There is no place for relaxation: narrow, treacherous roads, kilometers of special stages and cliffs hanging menacingly at the edge of the turn. Make a mistake – and there is no magic: you can’t rewind time, the car will continue on its way with all the dents and breakdowns. Between stages, no one will fix your equipment, and even the usual restart can be turned off to feel all the adrenaline and tension of a real rally. In one of the videos, this feeling is conveyed especially vividly: former Formula 1 pilot Robert Kubica rushes along the Jänner Rally special stage in complete darkness, almost without light – and wins. This is the essence of this sport.
Rally is madness on wheels. Imagine: you are racing along a narrow forest path, between trees, through mud and rocks, at breakneck speed. Every now and then the car goes into a skid on the edge of the abyss, and if there is a forest ahead, you just press the gas. Sometimes you fly up on a ramp so that it takes your breath away… and sometimes you flip over with a crash, because you lost control for a split second.

DiRT 4, like DiRT Rally, conveys this feeling of a fragile edge incredibly accurately. Here, it is not the crazy ones who win, but those who feel the moment. Just a little too much – you lose time. Just a little too much – you fly off the track. Success comes to those who know how to take wise risks and adapt to the harshest conditions: rain, mud, night stages.
And when fog or night begins, you drive almost by touch. Only the voice of the navigator and the dim light of the headlights tell you where the turn is, where the bump is. And in rallycross the situation gets even more complicated: the competitors ahead are smoking, there’s dust in the air – and you’re entering a turn almost blind.

DiRT 4 Car Controls, Damage, and Customization
In DiRT 4, the tracks do not forgive inattention. As soon as you relax a little, the wheels are already bouncing on a bump, and the car is falling off a cliff into a ditch. Sometimes you manage to get out and continue the race, losing only a couple of dozen seconds, but in other cases everything ends sadly: a broken car and an early end of the stage. But the landscapes and surfaces here are extremely diverse. Dirty country roads, winding asphalt roads, narrow alleys between houses, hills and even snow-covered forest paths, along which the car barely squeezes between the trees. Each turn can be the last – and therefore everything is important: reaction, and the ability to feel the car, and working the handbrake. And most importantly – listen to the navigator. Without his warnings, you simply will not notice a sharp turn or an abyss hidden around the turn.
Equally important is a careful attitude to the equipment. In DiRT 4, damage does not disappear between races — it accumulates, is transferred from one special stage to another, and gradually makes the car less and less controllable. It is not always possible to repair it and not everything, and there is always a shortage of time for repairs. There, during breaks, you can practice on shakedown or adjust the car settings for specific conditions.

Yes, the physics have become a little simpler compared to DiRT Rally — even on the simulator difficulty level. But the pleasure of driving has not gone anywhere. Each car feels different — sharp, stubborn, but alive. Even simpler models here behave like real animals, ready to break into a drift at the slightest provocation. The main thing that has been preserved is the feeling of control and connection with the road. When the car slides on wet clay or vibrates on gravel, and in your ears — the roar of the engine, the crunch of stones under the bottom and the impact of the suspension, you forget that you are not sitting behind the wheel, but in front of the screen.
The cockpit view has mixed feelings. In DiRT Rally it seemed more comfortable and realistic, but here too, first-person driving adds adrenaline. Driving a car in this mode is always a challenge, especially on difficult sections, where one mistake can cost you the race. For those accustomed to the ruthless physics of DiRT Rally, DiRT 4 may seem too soft. The cars have become a little more predictable on asphalt, the weight is felt better, but the braking distance is shorter, the behavior on gravel is simplified, and the rear axle sometimes behaves strangely. Because of this, it becomes more difficult to perform advanced techniques, such as the Scandinavian flick.
All this makes the controls more accessible overall – DiRT 4 clearly strives to be something between a hardcore simulator and an accessible arcade. For some, this is a step in the right direction, but for fans of “that very” DiRT Rally, it is more of a compromise.
DiRT 4 vs DiRT Rally: Key Differences and Impressions of the Game
The longer you play DiRT 4, the more obvious it becomes: this is no longer a direct sequel to DiRT Rally, but a completely different story. If the previous part seemed like a bold experiment – minimalistic, sometimes brutally complex and with obvious budget constraints – then DiRT 4 already looks like a full-fledged racing blockbuster. It feels scale, scope and an attempt to capture a wide audience. However, for all its “matureness” DiRT 4 cannot boast of modern technological gloss. The graphics are sometimes disappointing: angular rocks, strangely drawn trees, muddy textures. Some PC users also complain about weak optimization. Visually, it seems to have become “richer”, but not always “better”.
But in terms of details, the game has stepped far ahead. There are full-fledged award ceremonies, and animated service areas, and even neat parking of the car at the marshal after the race. Licensed music has also returned: instead of boring electronics, The Hives, Circa Waves, Bastille, Mother Mother and other indie heroes are now playing. However, fans of hard rock or techno are unlikely to like this playlist. The main thing is the content. It has become noticeably larger, and it has been developed much more deeply. Familiar disciplines remain: classic rally and rallycross. But the Pikes Peak climb has been removed, replaced by Landrush – off-road pickup and buggy racing. And this is a controversial decision: driving a buggy is boring, mud racing is not exciting and quickly becomes boring. Fortunately, this mode can simply be ignored.

Rallycross, on the contrary, remained at its best. Codemasters not only returned the FIA license, but also made this championship as spectacular as possible. This mode is especially pleasing:

mandatory joker lap, capable of changing the fate of the race in one moment.
Each race here keeps you in suspense from start to finish. The emotions are such that you forget about the graphical roughness.
And also — the career has been improved. If in DiRT Rally it looked more like a template add-on, then here everything is much richer. Team management, choice of sponsors, car paint, mail, micromanagement — all this creates a feeling of a real “racing life”. Points, tables, long stages — all this has not gone anywhere, it’s just that now you have something to do between races.
Freemode and Track Generator in DiRT 4
Like in the first part of GRID, in DiRT 4 players are again given the opportunity to customize their cars, decorating them with logos of various brands. Only now you can get real benefits for this – in the form of in-game currency. However, just sticking a sticker is not enough – you will have to complete the tasks set by the sponsor, for example, show the best lap on the stage. Codemasters went further. If earlier you could only hire teammates or mechanics, now you can assemble a real dream team – from engineers to PR specialists. And this is not just decoration. Improvements such as a comfortable recreation area or a new workshop increase the efficiency of the staff, and the development of the infrastructure helps to attract more generous sponsors and get the most out of them.
Online activities have also returned – online competitions, fun time trials, destroying signs and other side challenges. The good news is that the annoying gymkhana is no more. All these mini-modes are now neatly placed in a separate menu, so nothing interferes with enjoying the main career. Beginners will find DiRT Academy useful — a training mode where the basics of rally skills are explained step by step. This is not only useful, but also helps to feel the atmosphere of a real racing school.

But the main discovery of DiRT 4 was the free mode with a special stage generator. This is a real gift for those who are tired of the same tracks. You set the length, choose the difficulty level, climate — and the game gives you a unique route. Each race now becomes a new experience. Yes, individual fragments are sometimes repeated even within the same race, but the very fact of such a system is a huge step forward.
However, there is a fly in the ointment. Despite the large number of cars, there is a lack of some iconic models — for example, the game does not have Sebastien Ogier’s Volkswagen Polo. There are only five countries in which stages are held, and even with the track generator this may seem not enough. Legendary locations like Monte Carlo or Finland are missing. True, the rallycross discipline has five licensed tracks, which allows for a virtual championship. But compared to the real WRX calendar, where there are as many as 12 stages, this is still not much. There is something to work on in the future.
Ultimately, your attitude to DiRT 4 will depend on your expectations. The game does not try to become DiRT Rally 2, but it does not slide into the arcade madness of the first parts. This is a confident compromise – for both hardcore fans and beginners. If you want hardcore – turn off the assistance and go ahead. If you prefer comfort – the game is easily adapted. DiRT 4 is not a revolution, but a very solid step forward. Especially if you have always dreamed of a track generator that makes each race truly new.
Is DiRT 4 Worth Playing in 2025?
DiRT 4 is not the cutthroat simulator that DiRT Rally was, but it doesn’t descend into the circus of DiRT 3 either. It’s a balanced and quite friendly game that can be an ideal starting point for getting acquainted with the world of rally. However, if you are an old-school fan and grew up on the first parts, the changes may not seem for the better.
