The landing on Omaha Beach and the battle for Saint-Lo became a must-have in World War II shooters. And strategies weren’t left out either.
Steel Division: Normandy 44 is entirely dedicated to the battles in northwestern France. Unlike the Wargame series, where by the time the third part was released (taking into account the DLC), the number of factions was close to an encyclopedia, here the choice is much more modest — the narrow historical period has an effect. However, there is variety: the Axis side has exclusively German troops, while the Allies are represented much more widely – Americans, British, Canadians, French and even Poles.
As in Wargame, preparation for battle begins long before the first shot. First, the player assembles his “deck” – a set of units corresponding to one of the historical divisions that actually participated in the battles for Normandy. Here is the famous 101st Airborne Division “Screaming Eagles”, and the infamous 12th SS Panzer Division “Hitler Youth”, and many others – from classics to rare units.

The uniqueness of Steel Division is that each unit in the army belongs to only one division, which means it plays strictly by its own rules. Airborne, infantry, tank and mechanized units – all this affects the style of play. For example, paratroopers and tank troops lack flexibility, so it is more effective to combine them with other types of troops. One-on-one victory may depend solely on how convenient the enemy is for you.
Each army is divided into key categories: reconnaissance, infantry, armored vehicles, artillery, aviation, air defense, anti-tank weapons and support. All this forms your “deck”, taking into account one important feature: the battle in Steel Division is carried out in stages – reconnaissance, skirmish, full-scale battle. The first two phases are 10 minutes each, the third lasts until the end of the battle. The number of points for which reinforcements can be called depends on the current stage and the characteristics of the selected division. Plus, the units themselves are divided into phases: A, B and C. The first group is available from the very beginning, the second – from phase B, and the third enters the battle closer to the denouement.
It is interesting that reinforcement points are received automatically – there is no need to control special points, as in Wargame. Victory is achieved by dominating most of the map, giving even those who have retreated to their original positions a chance to gather their forces and try to turn the tide of battle – if there is enough time, of course.

Battles for key points in Steel Division: Normandy 44
It becomes clear from the very beginning of the battle: the struggle for important parts of the map has not gone away. But now everything is different – the points for which a fierce battle is taking place do not appear at the whim of the developers, but depending on the situation on the field and the decisions of the players. In the last match, a couple of lonely houses stood aside from the events, and now they are the key to holding the front. A crew with a machine gun occupied their walls, holding back the enemy infantry so that they could not get close to the guns hidden in the forest. But the old runway, which was usually shot through by tanks and artillery, the enemy managed to slip through thanks to smoke cover and a surprise attack.
Each new battle is an unknown. Will you fight for an intersection that was previously simply bypassed, or for an inconspicuous hill that provides an excellent view? Perhaps the battle will unfold behind a country road in the thicket or behind the hedges typical of French fields? Any little thing can turn into a critical advantage.
And this is what adds not only depth and tactical diversity, but also the atmosphere of those fierce June battles of 1944. When you realize that the enemy cannot break through not because the map is designed that way, but because you yourself have turned a small town into an impregnable fortress – the feeling of participating in a real campaign becomes stronger. By the way, unlike Wargame, there is now a clear front line on the map. It divides the territory into two parts – depending on who is standing where. The more you control, the more points go to you. But it’s not just about victory points. If a squad is surrounded behind enemy lines and there is no support nearby, it can surrender, especially if an enemy unit is nearby in full combat readiness. True, if there are command units nearby, the fighters hold out to the end – but there are usually never enough of them.
Another convenience has appeared: now you always roughly understand where the enemy is. Even if there is no visual contact, the bend in the front line gives away his presence. Reconnaissance, however, can still penetrate into the rear and remain invisible – but the overall picture has become much clearer.
Why Newbies Have a Hard Time in Steel Division: Normandy 44
If you decide to try yourself in Steel Division, be prepared: this game is designed for multiplayer from the very beginning. Yes, there are single-player campaigns – exactly three of them – but this is more of a training ground for beginners. Campaigns offer tasks right during the battle, allow you to slow down time (which is especially convenient at the start), but they have a very indirect relation to real network battles. Online, you are immediately thrown into the thick of things: a couple of minutes to arrange your troops – and go ahead, think on the go.
There are battles for every taste: you can have quick one-on-one duels, or epic 10 vs. 10 battles. It seems to have already been in Wargame, but it still works. And thanks to the division into game phases, the strategy becomes less predictable. For example, an infantry division can hold back armored vehicles in the early stages due to its numbers and agility, but if the enemy survives to the final stage and rolls out heavy tanks, then you will have a very hard time. Such sudden changes of pace, the transition from attack to defense and back are common here. It all depends on how you assembled your “deck” and how you used it.

But not everything is so smooth. Steel Division suffers from a typical RTS disease – too much micromanagement. You think about one flank – and now an enemy tank has rushed through on the other, and the artillery is burning. And although it would be nice to monitor each unit personally, in reality there is no time for this. The constant choice of what to sacrifice in favor of something more important is literally exhausting, especially at first. If the developers tried to find a balance between control and chaos, then for now it is somewhere on the way.

Let’s add here a not very clear interface. There seem to be notifications, but guess what they mean yourself. Destroyed important equipment? You will find out, perhaps by accident. And in a mass battle, getting lost in guesses like “where did my guns go” is a direct path to defeat. And do not rely on a pause – they will not give it online.
Of course, veterans of the genre have long been accustomed to such difficulties and, perhaps, will not even notice. But it will not be easy for beginners: you will have to learn in battle, from your mistakes, and you will simply have no time to enjoy the landscapes of Normandy. Although, to be honest, these landscapes themselves are not as impressive as before. IRISZOOM, of course, still allows you to instantly “dive” from the view of the entire map to the very ground, but the graphics no longer cause a wow effect – the times of European Escalation are behind us.
Add to this technical problems, which, alas, also did not bypass the game. Desync, crashes, especially annoying sound glitches – all this sometimes drives you crazy. I really want to hope that these are just the ailments of an early release, and the developers will fix everything. But for now, it feels like even the support of loyal fans does not save from shortcomings, and the intuitive interface still remains on the list of unfulfilled hopes.

Steel Division is not just another strategy game about World War II, but a game with character, which is primarily aimed at experienced tacticians. Despite the rather hackneyed theme, the project was clearly created with an eye on those who have been driving tanks and coordinating attacks on the minimap for many years.

Beginners may feel out of place: the competition is tough, especially if you are up against seasoned Red Dragon veterans. But this is what makes the game interesting: you learn, grow, and get used to it. And although it has the spirit of Wargame, Steel Division is not just a new wrapper. The developers went beyond cosmetics and made a truly independent game, not afraid to break the usual patterns.
