Instead, we choose a scenario composed of a series of sequential quests that unfold over time. This narrates the journey of one of eight races, each eager to become the first and the finest on Auriga. Completing the campaign and successfully establishing the core of the Earth Temple signifies a true triumph.

Yet, this isn’t the only way to achieve dominance in the game. You can wipe out all adversaries, outpace them in economic or scientific progress, or succeed through shrewd diplomacy. Alternatively, you might choose to colonize eighty percent of the planet’s surface. There are a variety of options available to suit every preference and play style, ensuring that each player can find their own path to victory. This diversity adds depth and excitement to the gameplay experience.

It seems that the replayability potential of Endless Legend can be no less, and sometimes even more exciting than in Civilization. Here, the plot elements are not just a background, as is often the case in global strategies, but become an exquisite accent, giving the whole game a special depth and atmosphere. Of course, we realize that we often mention Civilization, but it is almost impossible to do without this comparison. The project of the Amplitude studio evokes obvious parallels with the legendary series from Firaxis. Here we build and develop cities, send squads to reconnaissance and study territories, and also strive to maximize the collection of resources. In addition, we are waiting for diplomacy, trade with other factions and an exciting development of the technology tree – all this allows us to build our own, unique paths to victory.

Is it really the same? Not even close! The creators of Endless Legend have packed in many unexpected surprises for us. For instance, we can’t simply build a megacity and then another right next door. The world map is intricately divided into regions, and each region can only host one city — not just our city, but any city that players might establish. It’s clear that the demands for colonization speed are quite different under these unique conditions. Want to build a sprawling empire? Then get moving, rulers! While we take our time to explore fresh territories and develop our second settler, our crafty rivals are busy seizing half the map, leaving us scrambling to catch up. Time is of the essence in this competitive landscape!

You have to be friends with your neighbors

On the other hand, perhaps an excessive attachment to the idea of ​​expansion is not the best strategy. In Endless Legend, every action has its price: any buildings require constant maintenance costs, and armies require a fair reward for service. Expanding the number of cities under our control, we inevitably increase the need for “dust” – the local currency, without which it is impossible to maintain imperial greatness. And it is worth remembering: leaving a settlement unprotected means exposing it to the risk of being destroyed.

In addition to the opponents fighting with us for power, the world is inhabited by many minor factions – small tribes scattered across the map in abundance. They are prone to sudden raids on nearby settlements and troops, which evokes associations with the barbarians from the Civilization series. But the similarity is limited only to external manifestations: each of these factions has its own unique nature and is capable of not only threatening, but also providing invaluable support, becoming a reliable ally in achieving our goals.

By pacifying and integrating such settlements, we not only gain a strategic advantage in managing the empire, but also provide a steady stream of fighters trained on the spot. These recruits often outperform standard units in a number of key parameters, making them an integral part of our military doctrine.

The approach to minor factions can be multifaceted. One way is to demonstrate strength and suppress resistance, another is to establish mutually beneficial cooperation by providing resources or assistance. However, the most effective strategy remains the involvement of the local elite in the negotiation process, during which you can gain their trust by carrying out their orders and gradually strengthening the alliance.

The proposed tasks, as a rule, do not shine with originality: we are expected to attack neighboring settlements in order to assert superiority, collect specific resources for the development of the region, or clear out ancient ruins that contain both dangers and possible artifacts.

Ruins represent another intriguing facet of life on Auriga. They are generously scattered across the map, and their presence proves quite advantageous for a budding civilization seeking to grow. Most of the time, you’ll discover only a small amount of dust, remnants of what once was. Occasionally, however, you might come across a titan or adamantine mingled with glass-steel, treasures from the past waiting to be unearthed. And sometimes, if fortune smiles upon you, a side quest awaits, offering new adventures and challenges.

In essence, it seems there’s always something for the troops to engage in, keeping them occupied and focused on their missions.

Winter, on the other hand, poses significant challenges for everyone involved. Crops fail to thrive during this harsh season, tax collection suffers due to low yields, and armies struggle to move efficiently through the snow. As a result, you see nothing but loafers and slackers everywhere, making it a time of frustration and stagnation!

A soldier’s job is to obey orders

The combat in Endless Legend is presented in quite an unusual manner. When we clash with an enemy, we dive into a distinct tactical mode—similar to what we find in Heroes of Might and Magic.

The smooth and stunning transition from the overarching map to this combat arena, without any loading times, truly deserves a respectful nod to the developers, showcasing their attention to detail and design.

Prior to the fight, we are prompted to select a strategy—whether offensive, defensive, or holding ground—and position our troops, manually setting starting points for each soldier on hexes, as the action unfolds on a hexagonal grid. Each turn kicks off with deciding targets for our units: we can instruct them to strike a specific foe or heal a teammate if they’re part of a support group. This adds depth to our choices and strategy. After that, our role in the battle effectively comes to an end, leaving us to watch the outcomes of our decisions unfold on the battlefield. In each turn, warriors act independently, carefully choosing their movement routes without any hints. They aim for the most advantageous positions for attack or defense. You can’t engage in endless battles against the AI, as the number of rounds is fixed from the start. If you run out of time? It results in a stalemate!

While the combat sequences may not be as exhilarating or fast-paced as those in “Heroes”—the available control options feel rather “minimalist”—they certainly can’t be labeled as boring. This might be because battles in the game aren’t the central focus, unless you consciously opt for a “came, saw, and conquered” strategy.

Although our capacity to influence the battle’s outcome isn’t as extensive and varied as we might wish, the opportunities for enhancing “units” and heroes are quite satisfactory. Each hero possesses their own unique skill tree—just like seasoned veterans. Moreover, both heroes and regular fighters can be outfitted with various gear. Helmets, armor, weapons, shields, and other essentials can easily be upgraded for more advanced versions. This is precisely why different titans and adamantium are crucial—to ensure the military is well-equipped for the challenges ahead.

Whether you choose to dominate through warfare or cultivate a flourishing civilization, the possibilities are endless.

We will have plenty to fill our peaceful moments, although the urban planning and diplomatic aspects of the game closely mirror those found in Civilization and offer fewer fresh concepts. The same buildings in our cities become accessible as we uncover new technologies, which are organized into six distinct scientific eras. Within each era, there are also subdivisions into specific categories, making our choices even more nuanced. We’ll need to carefully decide what matters most to us: whether we prioritize acquiring a new type of unit, focusing on economic advancement, pursuing industrial growth, or enhancing our empire’s overall influence and reach. Mastering every aspect isn’t feasible, regardless of our determination. With each new discovery we make, the number of points needed for the next scientific breakthrough continues to rise. Interestingly, learning just nine technologies in each era will automatically elevate us to the next, representing roughly half of the total inventions available. This strategic choice-making adds depth, as we navigate the complexities of our developing civilization while considering the future of our empire.

It’s interesting to note that we can set the priority for our civilization’s development on multiple levels. The urban population is divided among food production, construction needs, research, income generation, and what’s known as “prestige.” This prestige plays a crucial role in determining the macro-level direction of our progress. Our imperial plan serves as a valuable tool in this endeavor. By utilizing a specific amount of accumulated prestige, we can provide continuous bonuses to various departments, enhancing their effectiveness and capabilities. Notably, declaring war or assimilating a village isn’t possible without having prestige as well, making it an essential resource for our civilization’s growth and strategic decisions. This interplay between prestige and development highlights the complexity of managing a thriving society.

We haven’t even stopped to properly highlight the gorgeous visual aesthetics and powerful musical score, elements that deeply enhance the immersion of the gameplay. If these elements are executed flawlessly, even Firaxis’ established title could be overshadowed by this ambitious and daring contender.
