First of all, about the graphics, which the creators presented as perhaps the main advantage of Battlefield 3. And we must admit: they did not lie. The game really looks great. The Frostbite 2 engine creates real magic – the picture seems to come off the screen, it is so saturated with details, light and movement. And what is especially pleasing is that all this splendor is available even on computers of average power. On “medium” settings, Battlefield 3 still amazes the eye and leaves behind a “wow effect”.

But with the single-player campaign, things are more modest. Those very spacious levels from the first Bad Company have been replaced by narrow corridors, in which, in essence, the same thing happens: you go forward and shoot stupid opponents, without much challenge and variety. Whether it is Iran, Iraq, Paris or a moving train – the essence of the missions practically does not change. The narrative is presented through cut scenes, but delving into the local “serious” drama is a thankless task. The script evokes a tired grin rather than interest.

Nevertheless, the campaign is not without merit. In the spirit of Call of Duty, there are spectacular scripted moments: a shootout on the roof under a sniper scope, hand-to-hand combat with the main villain in a QTE, an assault on a fortified building. They did not forget about the “attractions” – a tank race, a stealth mission, a classic of the genre.

The above may lead to the idea that the campaign can be safely skipped. But no – it is worth a try. You can complete the “single” in one evening, and despite the template, it is not tiring. The main reason to launch the single mode is the visual impressions. It would seem, well, how many of these tank missions have there already been in games? But here… Here you literally feel the heat of the destroyed equipment, see the sun breaking through the clouds of dust, the whole scene coming to life. Call of Duty with its outdated engine has long ceased to give such emotions. But Battlefield 3 still can.

Why Battlefield 3 Multiplayer Still Holds Up in 2025

As before, the main star of Battlefield 3 is, of course, the multiplayer. And, fortunately, it really turned out to be gorgeous – powerful, dynamic, addictive from the first firefight.

Globally, the system remained true to itself: all the same four combat classes, each with its own role on the battlefield:

• Assault – the main support fighter, can heal allies and participates in active firefights;
• Engineer – a specialist in technology, repairs and destroys transport;
• Support – heavy weapons, suppression and ammunition for the team;
• Scout (sniper) – fights from afar, uses motion sensors and helps control the territory.

You can play in one of three main modes (and if you take into account variations like Squad or Large, then even more). In Rush, attackers try to destroy a couple of repeaters until they run out of “tickets” for respawn. Defenders, of course, do everything to prevent them from doing so. In Conquest, you need to hold key points on the map – the team that loses the fight for territory begins to lose tickets, and with them – their chances of winning. Well, Deathmatch is for those who just want to relax and fight without any special tasks.

But the coolest thing is the variety of battles. Here are dense, dynamic battles in the spirit of Call of Duty on the “Metro”, where it is important not to think, but to react quickly. And large-scale clashes on the “Caspian Border”, where everything is decided by teamwork, equipment and coordination. By the way, aviation fans can celebrate – planes are back with us!

Battlefield 3 generally pleasantly surprises with how friendly it is to beginners. Here, everyone can find something to do. Can’t shoot accurately? Become an engineer, repair tanks and helicopters. If you like machinery, assemble a team and ride, crush, smash. If you just want to shoot, welcome to close combat. Everything is fair, without pressure or violence against the player’s style. And there are some innovations. For example, now you can attach a tactical flashlight to a weapon – and blind the enemy with it. Or really use suppressive fire: bullets whistle nearby, the screen blurs – the enemy no longer cares about accurate shooting. Such details make the game not only realistic, but also rich.

And, of course, the leveling system is a big plus. Here you get experience for literally everything: for a shot, and for help, and for an accurate throw of a first aid kit. Each class gets its own new equipment, guns are leveled up, gadgets are unlocked. And if you don’t just drive the vehicle, but actively use it, additional modules, weapons, and goodies will open up. As a result, Battlefield 3 is the same beloved, recognizable multiplayer, but with a much juicier, more flexible, and more interesting filling.

The best combat experience in Battlefield 3 is in Rush mode

The main thing to love about Battlefield 3 is, without a doubt, its multiplayer. It’s not just good, it’s cinematic. Hundreds of episodes unfold before our eyes thanks to the efforts of dozens of players (up to 64 people on a server on PC), and each match turns into its own action game. I still remember an episode I experienced just the other day. We were playing Rush mode on the tangled streets of the Eastern Bazaar map. The enemy was down to the last point, and our respawn tickets were quickly melting away. There was nothing left to do but go head-on.

The scene was truly dramatic: mortar shells were exploding overhead, a machine gun was rumbling (the sound work was a separate delight), concrete dust was falling from the roofs. There was only one street left, but the enemy was stubbornly holding the line. Grenades were falling into the shelter, and it seemed that that was it, that was the end… But then our tank appeared from the next alley. He’s like a hero from a movie – he comes to the rescue, we break through behind his armor, cross the damned street and, risking everything, blow up the repeater. Words cannot describe the intensity of emotions. It wasn’t just a match – it was an event.

In addition to the single-player campaign and multiplayer, the game also has a cooperative mode. True, it feels like something done in a hurry – six short missions, not connected by a plot, and the only thing that’s memorable is a good sniper operation. Even the “Special Operations” from MW2 seemed more interesting and well-developed.

But even the great multiplayer has its fly in the ointment – this is, alas, Battlelog. Imagine: to add a friend or go to a server, you need to use a browser. Yes, not an in-game menu, but a third-party web system, which also constantly crashes. Errors, freezes, the need to restart the game when changing servers – all this sometimes discourages any desire to continue.

Is Battlefield 3 Worth Playing in 2025: Pros and Cons

Throughout its history, the Battlefield series has been famous primarily for its exciting multiplayer. This is what millions of players came back for again and again — for large-scale battles, team play, and the feeling of real war. But now DICE has decided not to limit itself to just the online component and has taken a bold step towards a single-player campaign. As a result, Call of Duty, which reigned supreme in this segment for many years, has finally received a real competitor.

Of course, the main thing that Battlefield 3 takes is its visuals. Frostbite 2 produces a stunningly beautiful picture: lighting, destruction, detailing of the environment — everything is top notch. The game literally immerses you in itself. Each scene, be it a furious shootout on the streets of Tehran or a covert operation in night-time Paris, looks cinematic and powerful. The artistic style and attention to detail captivate from the first minutes.

The single-player mode, although not up to the level of the best story shooters, still pleases with a brisk pace and atmospheric missions. But the real party starts in multiplayer. Everything is polished to the smallest detail: class balance, well-thought-out maps, equipment that you really want to use. Each battle turns into a living, unpredictable story that the players themselves create.

While Call of Duty continues to follow the same path, Battlefield 3 offers a new quality: depth, spectacle and freedom of action. And now Infinity Ward will have to try very hard not to lose its leadership. Especially considering that fans are already stuck in multiplayer battles and are not particularly eager to switch to something else.
