This year’s THQ Nordic Showcase was not without its surprises: Weappy (creators of This is the Police and Rebel Cops) released a new trailer for their platformer The Eternal Life of Goldman, which has been highly anticipated since its announcement two years ago. The trailer, titled “What Would I Draw?”, doesn’t just showcase gameplay; it literally shows how each scene was drawn.
The game’s main feature, which immediately went viral on social media, is the ability to use a chicken as a means of air travel. Yes, old Goldman literally flies up, clutching a bird, and it looks both absurd and charming. The trailer itself is just over a minute long, but it also showcases the combat system: the staff isn’t just a weapon, but a multi-functional tool that can be upgraded, opening up new areas. Enemy encounters require less speed than precise timing—just like in good old platformers.
Visually, the game is a delight. Every frame is hand-drawn in a ligne claire style inspired by the works of Hergé, and, crucially, the developers have categorically abandoned generative AI—all animation is frame-by-frame, classic. Against the backdrop of modern indie hits, which increasingly rely on neural networks, this feels like a true manifesto. Incidentally, the trailer also hints at new locations—the very same archipelago through which Goldman will travel in search of the Mystical Beast.
As for platforms, PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch have been confirmed, with the game coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one. This is already good news for subscribers. And for those who want to try it out early, a free demo is already open on PS5 and Steam—and judging by early reviews, it’s actually playable and gives a good idea of the mechanics.
The irony is that The Eternal Life of Goldman was announced over two years ago, and since then, there’s been little news. This trailer is not only a gift to fans but also a clear answer to the question, “What have we been waiting for?” The answer: handcrafted craftsmanship, a lack of templates, and unique levels, each of which, according to the creators, offers completely new challenges rather than recycled versions of old ones.
An exact release date is still unknown, other than the vague “2026.” But given that the demo is already available, the full release is just around the corner.
