Ubisoft has officially announced the end of Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles – the tactical RPG will shut down its servers on October 30, 2026. The project, which was supposed to be Web3’s flagship in gaming, has shown no signs of life after two years on the market. The decision comes just months after the abandonment of blockchain features, leaving players to come to terms with the ending.

Why is Ubisoft shutting down Champions Tactics after two years?
The game, released on October 23, 2024, on PC (Ubisoft Connect), is a turn-based RPG where each of the 75,000 unique characters existed as NFTs. The project was built on the Oasys blockchain, allowing players to buy and sell characters using cryptocurrency. However, soon after release, it became clear that interest in such mechanics was rapidly declining. This is further evidenced by the closure date – exactly two years after launch, as if the publisher had already measured the deadline.
The project’s fate was cut short back in May 2026, when Ubisoft announced the gradual phasing out of Web3 features. Forge and Marketplace closed on May 27, and NFT characters were relegated to regular in-game heroes. The developers attempted to maintain the pace of updates, but players, seeing no prospects, abandoned Champions Tactics long before the official announcement. Financial losses are a particular concern: some NFT characters sold for over $63,000, but this is the exception rather than the rule. A wealth of analytics shows that the project was unable to compete even with niche indie games in the same market.
In-game purchases are currently disabled on all platforms, and the developers promise to post additional reminders about the upcoming shutdown. The measures essentially boil down to one thing: giving players time to say goodbye. On October 30, the servers will disappear forever, along with all characters, achievements, and deposits. This clearly demonstrates that even a major publisher is not immune to failure when betting on a fading trend.
What will Champions Tactics players receive after the shutdown?
The main question troubling the remaining fans is compensation. According to reports from multiple sources, players with the Divine rank for the past three seasons will receive bonuses in Might & Magic Fates, a deckbuilder reminiscent of Hearthstone and also incorporating Web3 elements. The tentative package of rewards has not yet been revealed, but it appears it will be timed to coincide with the server shutdown date.
There are no official statements regarding the fate of NFT assets after October 30th—they will likely cease to exist. There are no plans to withdraw characters or exchange them for real currency. Discontent in the communities is growing, but Ubisoft, as usual, is maintaining the stance of “we did what we could.” Evidence that the compensation will not be full is the company’s silence regarding refunds.
However, for those who invested time and money, this is small consolation. Of particular concern is the fact that Might & Magic Fates itself is in doubt—the game hasn’t been released yet, and its success is far from guaranteed. So the bonuses could prove to be a pipe dream.
The story of Champions Tactics is a clear example of how blockchain experiments, even from a major developer, can end in failure. Ubisoft will likely no longer launch such projects in the coming years. Players can only hope that at least the bonuses in the new game are real, and not just another sign that the industry is learning from its mistakes.
