At the July CEDEC 2026 conference, Konami producer Motoi Okamoto revealed an unconventional development quota: the Silent Hill f writing team was required to read 100-200 books a year. Management encouraged literary discipline, and within the team, the writers further pushed each other to succeed and maintain the bar. The main goal was to provide the developers with extensive “source material” (ideas, concepts, and styles), as well as to show respect for the author of the key plot—the renowned Ryukishi07.

Familiarization with the work of Ryukishi07, known for his cult visual novel series When They Cry (Higurashi and Umineko), became a fundamental element of preparation. The team needed to capture his unique style of constructing suspense and horror. Moreover, in April 2026, game director Al Yang of NeoBards Entertainment confirmed the high effectiveness of this approach in an interview with PC Gamer: the final text only went through about three revisions, and approximately 60% of the original script remained completely unchanged.

The Silent Hill phenomenon has long since expanded beyond the confines of a single American town. After lengthy discussions, Okamoto and Ryukishi07 concluded that Silent Hill is not a physical point on the map, but a mystical phenomenon capable of manifesting anywhere. This concept (previously touched upon in “The Short Message”) allowed the setting to be set in the fictional Japanese town of Ebisugaoka in the 1960s while preserving the spirit of the series without being tied to a traditional location.

Analysis of the results shows that the meticulous selection of the narrative base was entirely justified. The game’s sales surpassed 2 million copies by April 22, 2026, and Silent Hill 5 received an 86/100 on Metacritic, an 85/100 on OpenCritic, and won the CEDEC AWARDS 2026 for visual art, becoming the first completely new entry in the franchise to achieve such a high reception in 13 years.

Konami’s fundamental approach echoes a general industry trend: Obsidian’s Josh Sawyer previously emphasized that game narratives are built on a deep knowledge of literature and classical art, while composer Nobuo Uematsu criticized the modern gaming industry for its derivative nature due to its rejection of external sources of inspiration. Ultimately, Konami’s experience proves that systematic reading for screenwriters is not a formality, but the key to a project’s commercial and critical success.
