The Finnish post-apocalyptic shooter Road to Vostok is preparing a major update. Solo developer Antti Leinonen confirmed that the Build 2 patch is 75% complete, with a release scheduled for September 2026. The developers will reveal the exact release date at one of the upcoming game presentations.

The game has been in Steam Early Access since April 7, 2026, and has consistently attracted fans of tactical shooters in the vein of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. We’ll cover the patch’s key features, the AI overhaul, and the long-term development plans.

Build 2 is 75% complete: what’s already been implemented

The official developer report reveals a whole host of major changes affecting both gameplay mechanics and world content. Ahead of the full release, the game will feature a new faction, a reworked merchant system, and new areas to explore.

Major new features of Build 2 (codename “Nomads”):

  • New faction: “Nomads” — the first friendly faction in the Zone. Three unique models with three color variations have been created for both bandits and nomads.
  • “Driver” merchant: The owner of an old bus will give you a series of quests. The reward for completing these quests will be a key to a new personal shelter—a garage.
  • Two new maps: The “Vostok Airport” and “Bridge in the Border” zones are now open for exploration.
  • Items and equipment: Around 10 new items will be added to the game, including a tactical digital watch—an obvious homage to the G-Shock line from Casio.

Game Comparison: Before and After Build 2 Patch

Feature Current Version (Early Access) Build 2 (September 2026)
AI Logic Enemies only see the player and focus attacks on them Dynamic threat assessment: damage, distance, cover
Factions Hostile bandits only Friendly “Nomads” appear
Traders Basic NPC set “Driver” trader with quests and rewards (garage)
Maps Starting locations Added “East Airport” and “Border Zone Bridge”
Bosses Not available First rare boss Bootyman appears

How will survival tactics change with the new AI in Road to Vostok?

The key technical breakthrough in Build 2 is the complete reworking of NPC behavior. Previously, bots perceived the main character as the only source of danger. Enemies now assess the entire situation: distance to the target, damage dealt, visibility, and the presence of cover.

For the player, this means a change in the entire combat model. If bandits and nomads clash in battle, enemies can completely switch to the more dangerous threat, giving you the chance to retreat or take an advantageous position. The old tactic of “running out and picking them off one by one” no longer works – enemies react to ambient noise and cover much more intelligently. The bots’ sensor systems are already ready, but scripts for large-scale wall-to-wall firefights are still being refined.

Bogeyman: Road to Vostok’s First Boss

Build 2 marks the debut of the Bogeyman, the first of three planned unique bosses in the game. This enemy does not belong to any of the existing factions and acts as an autonomous hunter.

Encountering the Bogeyman in the Zone is a rare occurrence. He poses an increased danger, but defeating him guarantees valuable and unique trophies. The developer notes that if final testing goes smoothly, the Boogeyman will appear on servers immediately with the September patch.

What’s next? Build 3 and Build 4

Antti Leinonen also shared plans for the end of the year:

  • Build 3 (Q4 2026): Estimated to be released in Q4. The update will bring a redesigned trading interface with a dedicated quest tab, a new merchant, Grandma, and deep, unconventional missions.
  • Build 4 (Late 2026 – 2027): Expanding the arsenal to 50 original weapons with an advanced modular modification system.
