Electronic Arts continues to build excitement for EA Sports FC 27—and in a big way. A day before the full gameplay reveal, the publisher unveiled the cover of the standard edition featuring Kylian Mbappé, and also, albeit indirectly, confirmed the existence of an open-world mode called The Grounds. Rumors have swirled for months, but now things look much more serious. While fans are scrutinizing the Easter eggs on the cover, we’ve compiled everything we know about the series’ most high-profile addition in recent years.

The Grounds Mode Confirmed in EA FC 27

Let’s start with the main thing: the mode is real. Electronic Arts registered the trademark “FC The Grounds” on January 23, 2026. According to the Justia Trademarks database, the logo consists of the stylized letters “FC” arranged in a slanted triangle, with a smaller triangle in the left corner and the words “THE GROUNDS” beneath them. Registering a brand several months before release is a reliable indicator that a feature has moved beyond the prototype stage and into the final product plan.

On the cover of the standard edition, where Mbappé once again takes center stage, EA placed the tagline “Built from The Grounds up.” The hint is more than obvious, especially since the background features architecture inspired by London, Paris, and Rio de Janeiro. On social media, EA even invited fans to compete to find Easter eggs on the cover.

Open-World and Social Hub Features

What exactly is The Grounds? According to insiders and leaked materials from closed playtests in November 2025, it is an open-world social hub. Players will be able to create an avatar and freely navigate a shared map divided into districts, each dedicated to a famous football country. Instead of static menus, there’s a living football city where you can interact with other players, participate in minigames like soccer tennis, and street matches reminiscent of Volta. The structure of the mode is reminiscent of The City from NBA 2K or The Island from WWE 2K.

Minigames and The Gallery Collection System

Speaking of minigames, street football is expected to return to The Grounds, along with several casual competitions. Additionally, The Gallery, a collectible book, will be added to the game. Its mechanics mean that every player card earned from a pack remains in your personal collection forever, even if you sell it or use it in a mission (SBC). You can earn rewards by completing themed sets.

Trailer Release Date and Announcement Metadata

Regarding dates, the full gameplay trailer will be shown tomorrow, July 23, 2026. The unpublished YouTube video’s metadata already includes the tags “The Grounds,” “FC 27 The Grounds,” and “FC 27 Open World.” EA set the anchors themselves—there’s no coincidence here.

Key Questions About EA FC 27’s Open World

There hasn’t been an official announcement yet, so there are more questions than answers. Here are the key points EA hasn’t yet clarified.

EA Sports FC 27 Release Date and Early Access

The release date hasn’t been officially confirmed. But there is a benchmark: in recent years, the game was released on the last Friday of September. This year, it’s September 25th. Ultimate Edition owners and EA Play subscribers will get early access starting September 17th. So, tentatively, September 17th for insiders, September 25th for everyone.

Platforms and Legacy Console Support

There’s no official list here either, but it appears EA FC 27 will be coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam), Nintendo Switch 2, as well as PS4, Xbox One, and the original Nintendo Switch. The only question is whether The Grounds will receive a legacy console version—some sources are skeptical.

Will The Grounds Impact Career Mode and Ultimate Team?

No. The mode is positioned as an addition, not a replacement. Career Mode, Ultimate Team, and Clubs will remain in place. The Grounds is a social layer, an alternative to the menu, not a content sink.

New Project Assist Technologies and Career Improvements

In addition to the open world, Project Assist technology is mentioned—it uses real football footage to create more realistic player animations and movements. Career Mode will also receive updates, including improvements to the transfer system and a more lively commentary system.

Gameplay Depth and Future Prospects

The most important question: how deep will The Grounds be? Will it be a full-fledged RPG sandbox with progression, or just a sleek wrapper for quick access to matches? The answer will be tomorrow, after the trailer releases. EA is clearly preparing one of the most ambitious transformations for the series, and The Grounds could be the turning point fans have been waiting for since leaving FIFA.
