In anticipation of the franchise’s 25th anniversary, the publisher is preparing several announcements. The main one is a remaster of Wildlands for next-gen consoles, which is already out but is only now expected to receive official studio attention. Furthermore, the fate of the next major installment, Project OVR, remains unclear: the internal alpha failed, the deadlines have been pushed back, and the project’s leadership has changed.

Ghost Recon Wildlands Definitive Edition PS5 Review

The remaster hit shelves on July 6th, but the official announcement is timed for Gamescom. Priced at $99.99, the bundle includes the Season Pass, Year 2 Pass, both major expansions (Narco Road and Fallen Ghosts), as well as the Quick Start, Deluxe, Nightfall Protocol, and Cold Eye packs. Technically, it’s a tribute to fans: 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, improved textures, and a new mission, Last Rites. However, the mission will be released as a separate patch in August, along with the announcement.

The Development of Project OVR and the Future of the Ghost Recon Series

The codename has long been a source of speculation, but the project’s actual state is alarming. In the spring of 2026, the internal alpha build, according to the developers, was in a dire state—features had been cut, deadlines had been missed, and the transition to Unreal Engine 5 had resulted in a technical impasse. This led to management changes, some of the team was reassigned to other projects, and beta testing was pushed back to November. Officially, Ubisoft only acknowledged that “some features have been moved,” but insiders are talking about a significant reduction in scope.

The History of Ghost Recon from the First Game to the Present

The series began in 2001—back then, few expected that Red Storm Entertainment’s tactical shooter would set the standard for an entire genre. The first Ghost Recon emphasized realism and planning: you controlled a squad, not ran around alone. And then there was more: Desert Siege and Island Thunder were released in 2002, Jungle Storm and the full-fledged Ghost Recon 2 in 2004. But the real breakthrough came with Advanced Warfighter (2006) – the game moved the series into the near future, equipping soldiers with augmented reality and drones. Future Soldier (2012) added high-tech gadgets and a cinematic feel.

The Evolution of Tom Clancy’s Tactical Shooter

In 2017, Ubisoft bet on an open world, giving birth to Wildlands, a vast Bolivia where missions could be completed in any order. The game became a commercial hit, selling a number of copies that have yet to be revealed, but certainly exceeded 10 million. Breakpoint (2019), however, attempted to follow in its footsteps, but stumbled over live service and microtransactions. Now, seven years after the release of Wildlands, the series is returning to its roots, with Project OVR rumored to once again emphasize tactics and co-op operations.

Comparing Ghost Recon Wildlands and Breakpoint

Comparing these two games is a classic on gaming forums. Wildlands offered freedom and a natural pace: you chose how to take down a target—silently or loudly. Breakpoint, on the other hand, imposed a survival mode, tedious inventory menus, and a “tyrannical” difficulty system that quickly became tiresome. Furthermore, Breakpoint was technically flawed at launch—bugs, FPS drops, and odd physics turned off even dedicated fans.

Wildlands vs Breakpoint comparison

Reasons for Breakpoint’s Failure and Low Ratings

Ubisoft described Breakpoint’s Metacritic score as 56, and its sales of 6 million copies as “disappointing” (by comparison, Wildlands far exceeded this figure). Players complained about the empty world, repetitive missions, and intrusive store. Furthermore, the studio was too focused on trends (Raid mode, season passes), forgetting the soul of the original. Ultimately, Ubisoft urgently patched the game, but its reputation was damaged. Now, in anticipation of new announcements, many are hoping that the lessons of Breakpoint have been learned and that Project OVR will be a return to form.
