The cult horror RPG “Ao Oni 2” will arrive on Nintendo Switch and Steam on August 6, 2026. Game Studio has priced the port at 1,200 yen (approximately 600 rubles) and has included a brand new scenario, “Ao Oni: Seaside School.” This includes the classic speed mode, which is now accelerated to 17x.

Ao Oni 2 release date platforms and eShop price

The release will be simultaneous worldwide. The game will be released on two platforms: Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. The price is 1,200 yen including taxes. In rubles, that is approximately 600 yen—at the current exchange rate, even slightly less.

Price of the horror RPG Ao Oni 2 in rubles and euros

1,200 yen is the base price in Japan. In other regions, the price will likely be tied to local price points. For comparison, the first part on Switch launched at €4.50 on the European eShop. So, Ao Oni 2 is unlikely to break the bank.

Where can I buy Ao Oni 2 on Steam and Nintendo eShop

The store pages have not been released yet, but you can look for the game directly on the Nintendo eShop and Steam on August 6th under the name Aooni (that is how it is spelled in the catalogs). Pre-orders have not been announced yet.

The History of the Ao Oni Franchise and the Reasons Behind Its Horror Popularity

Without this context, news of a sequel is left hanging.

Ao Oni is a Japanese free-to-play horror game built on the RPG Maker XP engine, created in 2008 by a solo developer named noprops. The game was released in Japan and gained worldwide fame three years later, when Let is Players like PewDiePie reached an abandoned mansion with a blue monster. And then there was more: hundreds of fan remakes, spin-offs, novels, an anime adaptation, and even a feature-length film. The franchise became an indie horror phenomenon.

The 2016 sequel was originally a mobile game for iOS and Android. And now it is coming to the “major” platforms. And not just alone, but with a bonus.

Development of Ao Oni on RPG Maker XP from noprops to ports

It all started with RPG Maker XP and one person. No budget, no publisher. Just a scary story about four schoolchildren who ventured into an abandoned mansion and ran into a blue demon. Simple mechanics: search for items, solve puzzles, escape from the monster. And this formula worked – the game went viral. First in Japan, then worldwide.

Official ports of the first “Ao Oni” were released in 2024 on Switch and Steam – and once again gained an audience. Now it is time for the second part.

Differences between Ao Oni 2 and the first game on PC and Switch

The setting has changed: instead of a mansion, it is an abandoned school. The characters are the same—Hiroshi, Takuro, Takeshi, and Mika. But this time, they are followed by a teacher who also ends up trapped. Instead of a single monster, there is a whole collection of variations of the blue horror. And yes, the mechanics have become more complex.

New Ao Oni Seaside School Scenario and Release Features

Here is the main feature of this release. Ao Oni 2 comes with a completely new scenario, never seen before.

Ao Oni Seaside School

Seaside School Plot and Location in an Abandoned School

Hiroshi and company are going to summer sea school. Rumors of a monster in the abandoned school near the cabin prompt the classic solution: “Let is go there at night.” What follows are empty corridors, school bells ringing in the dark, and hordes of mutated creatures. The group breaks away, Hiroshi searches for his friends, and the player is given freedom: four stages can be completed in any order. The difficulty changes depending on the chosen route.

New monsters and blue demon mutations in Ao Oni 2

The developers promise a “diverse collection of unique Ao Oni.” Some monsters, judging by the description, take the form of mutilated sea creatures. We will see which ones exactly in August. But fans should be hooked: the blue demon in a new, marine form.

2x to 17x speed mode in the cult indie horror

The classic speed mode returns. Previously, you could select a multiplier from 2 to 15—now the upper limit has been raised to 17. You can customize the difficulty: if you want a slower progression, set it to 2x. Want to test your reflexes to the limit? Turn on 17x and try not to panic. Honestly, at 17x speed, the game turns into a horror action game with rhythm game elements.

How to find Ao Oni 2 in the Steam and Nintendo eShop catalogs

There are no direct links to the pages yet—the stores will update their catalogs closer to August 6th. But you should search for the game using the keyword “Aooni”—that is how it is listed in the digital storefronts. On the Nintendo eShop, look for the “Coming Soon” or “Pre-Orders” section. On Steam, follow the publisher is page, Game Studio Inc. . The launch price is 1,200 yen, but it may vary depending on the region. Stay tuned for announcements—they might even open pre-orders with bonuses.
