Right now, we know the update will be released free on all platforms in the second half of 2026. There’s no exact date yet, but Digital Extremes has promised to reveal it closer to release. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg—noir detective stories, card games, black acid rain, and the return of Albrecht Entrati lie ahead. We’ll break down all the details you might have missed.

What was shown in the Warframe: Tau trailer?

The main action takes place in Fornax, a colossal ring-city built by the Syntheses (Sentients). Once a paradise, it’s now a grim metropolis where the sky is perpetual black rain and the law is ruled by a criminal syndicate. The trailer, which ran for about 30 minutes, showed contrasting environments: from the elite gambling halls of Hunra to the dingy docks and slums where residents seek refuge in a dangerous substance called “Bloom.”

Highlights from the trailer:

  • Plot: Albrecht Entrati awaits the arrival of the Tenno in Fornax and enlists the help of a new Warframe to prevent the city’s fall.
  • Main Villain: Hunra is a ruthless crime lord who controls the production of “Bloom” and has access to the secrets of the Old World.
  • Atmosphere: Fornax draws inspiration from Blade Runner, Boardwalk Empire, and even The Sopranos.

The Tau System and the City of Fornax – A Guide to the New Star Map

The Tau System is more than just a new point on the map. This is the second star system available for exploration, dramatically expanding the Warframe universe. Although only two regions will be available at launch, Fornax will be the main highlight.

This ring-like city, encircling a Tau planet, is living proof that Synths can create not only weapons but also civilizations. However, after the war, everything fell into disrepair. The developers deliberately made Fornax a living metropolis with its own ecosystem, where even the vehicles are modified Synths. Instead of cars, synthetic “taxis” and cranes fly here, creating a unique aesthetic.

The central theme of the expansion is addiction, which, according to creative director Rebecca Ford, is based on the team’s personal experience. The developers want to show that addiction is not always a choice, but often the result of circumstances. So, “Bloom” here is not just a plot device, but a tool that allows us to look into the dark side of Fornax society.

Albrecht Entrati and Briscoe – What’s Known About the Plot

The central duo of the expansion is Albrecht Entrati and the new Warframe, Brysko. Entrati, still trying to undo the consequences of his experiments, infiltrates Brisco into the criminal underworld of Hunra. But Briscoe is no ordinary Warframe.

He’s a Chimera, specially created by Entrati for this mission, not a Protoframe or standard model. His main feature is his internal monologue, which we’ll hear throughout the game. He’s voiced by the legendary Matthew Mercer (known for his role as Cassidy in Overwatch and Critical Role). Ironically, although Briscoe remains silent when interacting with other characters, entire battles rage inside his head.

In combat, Briscoe uses a unique arsenal:

  • Brass Knuckles “Rain and Sun” – for close combat.
  • Explosive Playing Cards – as throwing weapons.
  • The Corecracker Revolver is a powered-up weapon.

The trailer also featured a canine companion, but no further details are available.

Card Game, Collaboration, and Other Announcements

Warframe Portau cards

In addition to the main content, Digital Extremes has prepared several surprises that will seriously hook even those tired of shooting games into Fornax.

  • The Portau Card Minigame: Warframe is getting a card game for the first time. Portau is a noir-themed poker with its own suits: Bloom, Core, Moon, and Sun. It’s a great way to pass the time between missions and, perhaps, a good replacement for the beloved Gwent in Cyberpunk.
  • New Enemies: Fornax is home to a new Synthesis faction, the Fornax Drowners. They’ve evolved differently than their Origin System counterparts, promising exciting gameplay.
  • Fortnite Collaboration: As with other major announcements, there’s a crossover here. Fortnite will feature cosmetics that let you try on Excalibur’s appearance.
  • Iceblade of Narin Fall Update: While we wait for Tau, the developers are preparing another update for fall 2026 with a new Ice Warframe (a female Frost) and the long-awaited Banshee rework.

What’s next? We’re waiting for official confirmation of the exact release date. Digital Extremes promises to keep us updated, but for now, you can replay the quests leading to Tau to refresh your lore. In any case, this will be one of the highlights of the year for all fans of “space ninjas.”
