Rockstar risks a massive boycott from independent retailers due to the release format of Grand Theft Auto 6. Sources claim that physical copies of the most anticipated action game of the decade will be mere dummies with a download code, and a full-size disc release is not even planned.
Fans can now pre-order GTA 6, choosing the basic version or the premium Ultimate Edition. Expectations are high. However, under the plastic wrapping, buyers will find an unpleasant surprise: a cardboard voucher instead of the classic Blu-ray disc. Until recently, insiders reassured the community, claiming that a physical release would definitely happen a couple of months after the digital launch. However, a recent report from The Hollywood Reporter has shattered these illusions. According to their sources, Rockstar has categorically refused to print discs. Completely.
Why retailers have declared war on the creators of Grand Theft Auto 6?
The reaction from the industry has been extremely harsh. The British store Loot Box Gaming openly stated that it would refuse to sell the game if rumors about “boxes with codes” were confirmed. The Canadian chain VGP immediately joined the protest. (These guys, by the way, have been boycotting such blanks for years.)
The sellers’ logic is crystal clear and concerns the basic survival of the industry. A real physical release guarantees gamers actual ownership of the title, while a digital key is merely a temporary rental license. For independent stores, selling such surrogates is tantamount to suicide. By agreeing to sell plastic dummies today, they are destroying the market with their own hands. The only way forward is a complete transition to digital. And then there will definitely be no place for traditional stores.
As a reminder, Grand Theft Auto 6 will be released on November 19, 2026, on the current generation of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
