The sequel to the underwater survival simulator Subnautica 2 got off to a great start in early access last month, garnering an impressive online following and a mountain of rave reviews, but the developers have no plans to slow down. The project will remain in production for several more years. Against this background, lead designer Anthony Gallegos revealed the studio’s plans for the coming months. Fans of the original are waiting for a comeback of the cult feature, although fans of genocide of the local fauna certainly have nothing to rejoice about.

What will be added to Subnautica 2 in the upcoming updates?
The developers are preparing an extensive content patch that will introduce a completely new biome — a harsh region inhabited by a massive Leviathan Collector. According to Anthony Gallegos, this location will bring back one of the most sought-after gaming mechanics from the first part. The designer’s phrase “get ready to stomp” leaves no room for doubt: the famous Prawn exosuit returns to the sequel. The heavy walking mech was perfect for exploring extreme depths, allowing players to drill for rare resources, collect samples, and famously navigate with a cat hook. Whether all the old modules will appear immediately at the start of the patch is still an open question.
In addition to heavy machinery, the authors will seriously rework the cooperative mode, which suffered from annoying technical problems at the release.
Voice chat without delay. The developers will finally fix the built-in connection by removing the annoying two-second ping when communicating. New emotions. The characters will receive a pack of animations for a more lively interaction underwater. Aggression of the fauna. Innovations have already adjusted the behavior of predators like hammerhead fish and nibblers, changing the frequency of their attacks and damage.
Will there be weapons in Subnautica 2 to destroy Leviathans?
Fans of aggressive survival style have been demanding for months to add a full-fledged combat knife to the game to cut biting fish right and left. Unfortunately, the authors are adamant here — the concept of the simulator is still based on research and protection, and not on the destruction of the ecosystem, so legal weapons for killing monsters should not be expected. However, if it is vital for you to arrange a monster hunt, this problem on PC will surely be quickly solved by fan mods for Subnautica 2.
