Hope appears when an ancient mine is discovered under a layer of earth. Deep beneath the surface, fragments of a rocket are hidden. But getting to them is not an easy task. You will have to dig tunnels, build infrastructure, set up resource extraction and logistics, because each component must be carefully raised to the surface and delivered to the assembly site. The campaign is built around this idea: collect six key parts of the rocket, fill it with fuel and, finally, leave the dying planet. However, it doesn’t end there — after achieving the goal, you can continue the game, developing the city and developing the mines further, without rushing.

Unlike previous games in the series, in SteamWorld Build the plot plays a purely background role. It is more of a reason to start than a full-fledged story. Several animated videos, short scenes with dialogues during key events and training phrases — that’s the entire narrative. However, within the framework of a city simulator, more is not required. The scenario here is simple, even naive — at times it seems that it is designed more for a teenage audience. Although the developers still tried to surprise players with a small plot twist closer to the end.
But that’s not the point. The focus is on the process: construction, management, excavations, development of the city and the mine. And in this regard, SteamWorld Build works like a clock – with steam, creaking and the charm inherent in the entire series.

Fortunately, there is no need to be afraid – you cannot “lose” in the usual sense here. The worst case is that your settlement will simply stop growing if something goes wrong.
The essence of the mechanics seems familiar: we build houses for residents, build production chains, provide robots with everything they need. However, the local inhabitants – steambots – have their own characteristics. Each class has its own “social basket”. Simple workers will have enough water, coal, a little repair and a store nearby. But engineers, aristobots and scientists need much more: comfortable housing, special resources and complex buildings. But they are also more useful — for example, engineers are indispensable when launching high-tech facilities like a distillery.
As a result, a city is built with clearly zoned blocks — for each class of robots. And it will no longer be possible to simply scatter houses and warehouses anywhere: you need to take into account logistics, roads, the radius of action of buildings and much more. Despite the apparent complexity, the system is built intuitively and very quickly becomes clear. However, this is only half the picture. The main intrigue unfolds underground. To assemble a rocket and leave the doomed planet, robots will have to go down into the mines — and here a completely different game begins.

The dungeons live by their own laws. At each of the three levels, you will find new resources, new dangers and special mechanics. This is where the most valuable materials are mined — from scrap iron and gold to oil, gas and rare crystals. Moreover, the process of their extraction differs from what happens on the surface. Some resources can be dug up immediately, simply by destroying a block of earth. Others are hidden in endless veins that require constant work.
And here, too, class division works. Miners pave the way, prospectors dig up resources, engineers repair mechanisms and install equipment, and guards fight off the local fauna – from aggressive bugs to hostile robots. Everything resembles a hybrid of strategy and underground roguelike: the control system here is indirect, the interface is step-by-step-building, and the elements of defense – turrets, traps and competent defense planning – are mandatory. The transition between the levels of the mines is conveniently implemented – one click is enough, without loading or waiting. And this is good, because you will have to return to the upper layers more than once, be it for evacuation, improvements or regrouping.
As a result, we get a game with a double bottom – literally and figuratively. The surface pleases with relaxed gameplay and a well-thought-out economy, and the dungeon offers a challenge and an atmosphere of exploration. And together they work surprisingly harmoniously.
How Economy and Management Works in SteamWorld Build
When we launch a city-building strategy, everyone has certain expectations in their subconscious. We want clear mechanics, clear production chains, an interface in which you don’t have to get lost, and visuals that are not only attractive but also atmospheric. Ideally, the game should engage you from the first minutes, but not overload you.
SteamWorld Build may seem too simple at first glance, especially to those accustomed to large-scale economic sims with dozens of interconnected systems. There are production chains here, but they really start to reveal themselves closer to the middle or even the final third of the playthrough. And here’s what’s important: by this point, the player is usually already provided with all the basic resources in abundance. Therefore, you can build without any special calculations — there is no need to build perfectly debugged schemes. If you want, you can put a factory or processing building anywhere, and everything will work. On the one hand, this is comfort, on the other, it’s a bit lacking in challenge.
As for the clarity of the gameplay, the developers have clearly tried hard. There is a special interface where you can track how many resources are coming in and how many are being spent at any time. The visualization is made as accessible as possible – you can immediately see where the economy is sagging and where you should direct your attention. This greatly simplifies planning and makes city management intuitive, even if you go down to the lower, mine levels. The game as a whole takes on convenience: everything works smoothly, the interface is not overloaded, and navigation between floors is unusually smooth. I would like to thank the developers for this – it is rare when the controls do not cause irritation.

The atmosphere is a separate story. The world of SteamWorld Build is cozy, warm, with a pronounced style. Even though the city is inhabited by steam robots, not people, it is pleasant to watch their bustle. Even though the animations are more decorative than functional, they add life. Visually, the game resembles a miniature steampunk world, where everything is done with love and a bit of irony. There are funny signs, details on buildings, and comical lines from the characters — all of this makes the game come alive. But there are some downsides. For example, the strange behavior of workers in the mines: they can ignore blockages that prevent further construction for a long time. And this is not a bug, but part of the logic of priorities. You have to manually re-plan the construction or wait until they finally get to the right site. This is not critical, but annoying.
A more serious problem is the artificial stretching of the gameplay. Sometimes it feels like the game is deliberately slowing down development, forcing the player to “mark time” in one place longer. Instead of a sense of growth and progress, a slight boredom appears. This is especially noticeable when most of the tasks have already been solved, but the story still stretches like a spring. In general, SteamWorld Build is more of a cozy constructor than a hardcore strategy. It’s a nice place to relax, build a town, watch the steam-powered inhabitants, and develop slowly. But if you’re looking for a deep economy or a tough challenge, you might want to look for something with more teeth.

City development in SteamWorld Build is based on reaching certain stages, and most often it all comes down to the number of steambots of the required class. At the beginning, it is almost not felt – there is always something to do, new buildings, tasks and opportunities are constantly opening. But closer to the end, when it seems that the rocket launch is about to happen, the game suddenly slows down sharply. To unlock the final technologies, you have to artificially increase the number of scientists. The problem is that these scientists themselves are almost useless: there is little work for them, and more than enough requests. Give them expensive entertainment, complex goods, and the benefit from them is minimal.
The final stage, by the feel of it, took me no less time than the entire previous playthrough. I just turned on maximum acceleration, minimized the game and periodically returned to transfer another aristobot house to a scientific dormitory. And when everything is ready, you don’t need to do anything at all. All that’s left to do is watch as the steambots slowly but surely refuel the rocket.
Yes, I understand that this is a casual strategy… but why take it to the point of absurdity?
Is SteamWorld Build Worth Trying in 2025?
The saddest thing about SteamWorld Build is the realization that after the first playthrough, the game almost exhausts itself. Yes, you can formally start over on a different map, but in reality, it will not offer anything fundamentally new. Everything is the same: we dig in the mines in search of parts for the rocket, while simultaneously developing the city on the surface. Yes, at first the process is exciting, especially when everything is just beginning and each new class of steambots opens access to new buildings and opportunities. But towards the end, it becomes noticeable that the mechanics are starting to repeat themselves. I could not bring myself to start the campaign a second time – the first experience turned out to be both sufficient and exhaustive.

Nevertheless, if you do not have high expectations for the game and perceive it as an easy, relaxing strategy for an evening or two, then it is quite capable of giving pleasure. Especially for players who are not so much interested in strategic tension, as in a pleasant atmosphere and visual comfort. This is not a game that you want to study up and down, but it is quite one that you can get stuck into after a hard day. The main thing is not to expect too much from it.
