PGL launches XMark Media Cup tournament on GeoGuessr with a new format and strong partners - Image 1
7 months ago vpesports

The esports organizer PGL decided to try himself in a non—standard discipline – the browser game GeoGuessr. The company has announced the XMark Media Cup, which will be held on December 20-21 and will be PGL’s debut in this geographical guessing game.

Tournament format: double draw and tough finals

The tournament will be built according to the double-elimination system. Each match will be played in the bo3 (best of three) format, but the grand final is stretched to five cards – there is no room for error.

The rules for each confrontation will be the same. Players will play 10 standard rounds, with increased damage starting after the fourth round. Plus, the Move, No Move and NMPZ modes will be used — for those who are into the topic, this is a classic of competitive GeoGuessr esports.

You can watch all this on the PGL channels on YouTube and Twitch, plus they promise POV broadcasts from the players themselves – convenient if you want to see how they think in real time.

Partners: 1xBet becomes the title sponsor

The general partner of the tournament will be 1xBet, a betting company that has been involved in esports for several years. The company stated that it will promote new competition formats and help expand the boundaries of the industry. In 2025, 1xBet launched in partnership with a bunch of teams and tournaments, so its appearance here is logical.

GeoGuessr in esports: not a joke but reality

If anyone thinks that GeoGuessr is just fun for geography lovers, then no. Since the launch of the esports scene in 2023, the game has been gradually gaining momentum. In 2025, regional majors were held in Japan, the USA and Sweden, where participants fought to reach the World Cup finals.

The prize pool of that tournament was $108,480 (about £80.953), and peak viewing exceeded 360,000 viewers — more than a year earlier. The winner was Radu ‘Radu C’ Casapu, who took the main trophy.

At the same time, GeoGuessr partnered with analytical platforms like Esports Charts to publish tournament statistics. The game also teamed up with Opera GX, which became the official browser partner of the World Cup finals — symbolic for a browser game where everything revolves around maps and guessing locations.

Now, with the arrival of PGL and the XMark Media Cup, the stage gets another serious tournament. Let’s see how this affects the GeoGuessr roadmap for 2026. If the organizers continue in the same spirit, discipline can gain a foothold in the calendar of esports events along with more familiar titles.

The future of GeoGuessr in esports: What awaits discipline

PGL’s entry into the GeoGuessr ecosystem is not just a one—time action, but a signal of major changes. In two years, World Cup viewings have grown by more than 400%, which is rarely seen even in established disciplines. The 2026 World Cup is scheduled to take place at Berlin’s Tempodrom from September 2 to 5. The 3,500—seat venue already hints that the organizers are seriously counting on mass interest.

The format of the season is also changing. In 2026, the Swiss system will be introduced instead of the circular one, which will add unpredictability. The regional leagues are divided into EMEA, Americas and APAC — 44 players (22 returning + 22 from qualifying) will compete for 16 direct slots for the finals. These are no longer just tournaments for the sake of tournaments, but a structured system with a clear hierarchy.

The reason for this is the steady growth of the audience. The peak of 363,415 viewers at the 2025 finals exceeded last year’s figure by 65,000, and with a prize pool of $108,000, the hour mark exceeded 1.67 million. Content makers like Ludwig, ZeratoR, and ExtraEmily have joined the broadcasts, which has expanded their reach far beyond the narrow community.

The forecast is simple: let the Berlin championship become not just a tournament, but a festival with workshops and activities, and the geographical guessing game will finally gain a foothold in the top echelon of niche esports disciplines. PGL, with their experience in Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2, can add a production gloss that was previously lacking. If the trend continues, 2026 may be the year when GeoGuessr will no longer be perceived as “just browser fun.”
