League of Legends is preparing for the 2026 season with a notable revision of the basic rules of esports matches. Riot Games presented the First Selection system, an updated approach to choosing sides and the order of the draft, which directly affects the starting advantage of the teams.

Everything used to be predictable. The blue side almost automatically received the first peak, and with it a statistical advantage. In the BO1 matches and the BO3 or BO5 starting cards, the blue cards were more often awarded to teams with higher seeding. Then the scenario was also fixed: the loser chose a side, the winner adjusted.

Now the logic is changing.

First Selection Mechanics and New Draft Rules

The main idea is to separate the choice of side and the first peak. The team, which previously simply chose “blue” or “red”, now gets a more flexible tool and must make one of two decisions:

  • choose a side (blue or red);
  • choose the order of picks — first or second in the draft.

After that, the opponent automatically gets the remaining option. If one team fixes a side, the other controls who opens the draft. And vice versa.

The mechanics are simple on paper, but in practice they add pressure even before loading the map. A mistake at this stage can cost the entire series.

How it works in BO1, BO3 and BO5 formats

In singles matches and the opening games of the series, the right of first choice is still tied to seeding. The difference is that now it doesn’t mean a guaranteed blue side or the first peak.

In the BO3 and BO5 series, after the first card, the losing team gets the right to choose again. And again, not just sides, but one of two strategic levers.

If the seeding is equal, a coin flip comes into play. In some regional leagues, decisive 1v1 duels are used instead, a local practice that persists.

The reasons for the introduction of First Selection and the balance of the parties

According to the official explanation of Riot Games, First Selection is the result of match analysis and feedback from professional teams. The data showed a skew in the win rate of the sides, and players increasingly pointed to too much starting inertia of the draft.

The new system should blur this advantage and turn the preparation for the match into a more subtle game. According to the plan, teams will take into account the pool of champions, the opponent’s style, and even a specific series card before the start of the draft.

In part, the approach echoes Fearless Draft: less automatism, more decisions with consequences.

For viewers, this means one thing — fewer boilerplate starts and more situations where the outcome of the series begins to take shape even before the first ban. For teams, it’s an additional layer of strategy where you can’t make mistakes.

The Global Transformation of League of Legends esports in 2026

The esports League of Legends in 2026 enters the season with an updated architecture, both in terms of format and money. Riot Games is gradually putting together the whole picture, and now it’s clear: these are not cosmetic edits, but a restart of the logic of the entire scene.

Schedule and venues of the 2026 season tournaments

The First Selection system will be applied without exceptions — in all regions and at all international tournaments of the year. The schedule of the main events has already been fixed:

  • First Stand — March, Sao Paulo. The tournament opens the season and will be the first test of the new draft model on the international stage.
  • Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) — Daejeon, South Korea. The classic equator of the season, but with a new strategic dynamic.
  • Worlds 2026 — North America, final in New York. The main tournament of the year, where all the changes will work at maximum speed.

At the same time, Riot confirmed the return of the LCS and CBLOL to the status of independent leagues. The 2025 joint format is closed. Regional identity is again a priority.

Hall of Legends and Award Ceremony at Worlds 2026

The Hall of Legends will be a part of the season again. After Faker and Uzi, the list will be updated with a new name — but a little later than the scene is used to. The ceremony was moved closer to the final stage of the Worlds in order to integrate it into the overall narrative of the championship, rather than making it a separate information channel.

For Riot, this is an important marker: the history of the players becomes part of the ecosystem, rather than a fragmented monument to past achievements.

The reform of the Global Revenue Pool and the finances of the Riot Games leagues

The most delicate point is finances. Riot has officially confirmed the redesign of the regional distribution model with the Global Revenue Pool.

The logic is this:

  • Regional prize funds are being reduced as an independent item;
  • the released money goes into the development of leagues and infrastructure;
  • Global tournaments — MSI and Worlds — continue to receive funding from GRP.

The reason is simple: regional prizes provided small payouts to players, but did not solve systemic problems. The focus is now shifting to ecosystem sustainability, contracts, operational stability, and long-term league growth.

This decision does not look loud, but it will determine who will survive the race after 2026.

The impact of changes on the esports ecosystem LoL

The 2026 season is not about HYPE announcements, but about setting up mechanisms. The new draft breaks the usual patterns, the financial model is moving away from one-time payments, and international tournaments are becoming the showcase of the entire system.

If you don’t follow LoL Esports superficially, this year should be kept in focus from the very start. This is where what will be the norm in the next few years is formed.
