The Story of Malzahar
Voices Out of Icathia
Malzahar’s transformation began with sound rather than sight — voices only he could hear, murmuring across Shurima’s desert reaches until they led him all the way to the ruins of Icathia itself. There, amid wreckage the Void had already claimed long ago, he looked directly into that emptiness and came away permanently changed.
A Shepherd’s Logic
What he brought back wasn’t fear but conviction. Malzahar reads the Void not as an invading horror but as the actual path toward uniting all life, and Runeterra’s salvation along with it. He now moves through the world as something between prophet and shepherd — gathering followers into that vision when he can, or, when persuasion fails, simply unleashing the voidling creatures he keeps close at hand instead.
What He Carries Beneath
His kit plays out that same tension between patience and release. Call of the Void opens twin portals that silence anyone caught in their fire, Malefic Visions plants a lingering curse that spreads through anything it eventually kills, and Void Swarm summons voidlings to handle the grinding work up close. Nether Grasp, his ultimate, channels raw energy from the Void to suppress a single enemy outright — a small, controlled preview of the unification he insists is coming for everyone eventually. His passive, Void Shift, grants him damage reduction and crowd control immunity whenever he hasn’t recently been hit, as though even the Void itself is protecting its chosen messenger. Kindred creatures from that same emptiness, like Kai’Sa and Cho’Gath, only reinforce how much of the Void has already slipped into Runeterra. As a mage who holds the mid lane through sheer attrition, Malzahar spends his mana the way he spends his followers — patiently, and without much room for doubt. Even Kassadin, who fought his way out of the Void by force, represents the kind of resistance Malzahar’s shepherding is meant to eventually overcome.
