Volibear vs Amumu Counter Pick

Amumu is one of the few opponents whose passive changes what magic resistance is worth. Cursed Touch makes his basic attacks curse a target so that incoming magic damage also lands bonus true damage, and true damage ignores the 32 magic resistance Volibear starts with. That should be a problem. The recorded result says otherwise: Volibear takes the jungle matchup at 56.2% across 121 games on patch 16.13.1.

The reason sits in Tantrum and in the shape of Amumu’s health curve. Tantrum permanently cuts the physical damage Amumu takes, and Volibear’s damage is listed as physical, yet the reduction is flat rather than proportional, so it matters least when the hits are largest. The Relentless Storm escalates his attack speed until the attacks spill bonus magic damage onto everything nearby, and Amumu’s magic resistance is the same 32 Volibear carries. Amumu also starts with the larger health pool at 685, then ends at 2,283 against Volibear’s 2,418, with 101 armor against 123.4.

Positioning decides the rest. Bandage Toss is Amumu’s only gap closer and his main engage; once it is spent he has no disengage, and Sky Splitter is enough to hold him inside a fight he no longer wants, shielding Volibear whenever he stands in his own blast.
