In Gothic 1 Remake, magic is both dangerous and satisfying. But casting Fireball or paralyzing an enemy with Shock requires mana. The higher your Magic Circle, the more voracious the spells. The game doesn’t hide this, but it doesn’t explain how to get that mana. After becoming a Novice, you’ll have a pitiful supply of energy. Leveling up only adds health. It’s a mess.

There are several ways to increase your magic reserve. It’s important to understand right away: mana doesn’t make your spells more powerful. Their power is written in a scroll or rune—for example, Lightning Ball has charge levels, and each one consumes more mana. So, we focus on the number of shots, not the damage.

Three effective ways to quickly increase mana in Gothic 1 Remake

The first and most reliable is training your mind with learning points (LP). The principle is simple: 1 LP = +1 mana. You can invest 5 XP at once and get +5—it works the same as with Strength or Dexterity. No catches.

Second, equipment. Rings and amulets with a bonus to mana are scattered throughout the world, some are sold by merchants. This isn’t the main path, but it’s a nice addition.

Third, potions. Alchemy in Gothic 1 Remake allows you to brew flasks that increase stats. However, recipes and ingredients aren’t usually found lying around.

Gothic Remake mana training

Where can I find magic teachers and mana mentors in the different camps?

If you’ve chosen the path of stable training, look for mentors. Here’s who accepts them and where:

  • New Camp, Chronos—the first water mage you’ll meet. He stands in the center of the camp behind the rice field, inside a stone circle with a blue glow. You can’t miss him.
  • Old Camp, Torres—a fire mage. He conducts the quest “The Price of Magic,” opening the door to the world of spells.
  • Old Camp, Corristo (Supreme Fire Mage). He’s located in the Temple of Innos, near Gomez’s Fortress. He’ll start teaching you about mana and circles when you embark on the path of the Fire Mage—starting in Chapter 3.
  • New Camp, Saturas (Supreme Water Mage). He’s hidden in a cave deep in the Water Mage’s refuge. He’ll become available starting in Chapter 2 if you’re an acolyte of the Order of Water.
  • Swamp Camp, Baal Kadar—a tricky option. In Chapter 1, you can impress him by using the “Sleep” scroll on one of the acolytes. After that, he’ll allow you to farm mana. However, he won’t grant you true Sleeper magic until you join the Brotherhood.

The main thing is, don’t expect mana to flow naturally. You have to go out and get it, spend XP, and sometimes do strange things (like putting poor acolytes to sleep). But when your supply allows you to launch three fireballs in a row, you’ll understand it was worth it.

Where can I find the best ring potions and valuable mana amulets?

Essences are what really help when you’re low on XP or your teacher is far away. Gothic 1 Remake has several types of potions that permanently increase stats. The most common are minor essences, which provide +2. There are also options for +3, +4, and even +5. We need “Spirit Essence”—it increases mana.

By the way, you can get a decent reward in Chapter 2. The quest “Letter to the Fire Mages” gives you a choice of potion—take “Spirit Extract.” It adds +4 to mana.

Locations of prepared mana elixirs and rare essences on the map

The first copy of “Spirit Essence +2” is practically right under your nose. Go beyond the Old Camp, to the rock wall that leads to the cave with Nek’s corpse. The quest “The Missing Guard” will lead you there. Look for the statue in a small alcove—the potion is hidden nearby.

Another Spirit Extract is kept in Y’Beron’s room. You can get there in Chapter 2. The chest inside—crack it. Don’t miss it.

The most interesting part is on the eastern edge of the map, just above the Swamp Camp. There’s a beach with shipwrecks and Fire Lizards. Dodge the lizards, climb to the ship’s bow (forward mast), and from there, jump to the climbing wall. Further on, the path through the rocks will lead to the Goblin Nest. Kill the goblins, then deal with the Troll inside—the trick is to shoot him from the entrance and then retreat into the narrow cave; he won’t fit through. After clearing it out, open the chests—there’s another Spirit Extract inside.

But there are a few details. Climbing rocks requires skill. It’s unlocked in the Swamp Camp from Theron. This NPC sits on the beach to the right of the Sleeping Temple. Complete his request (the quest “Aim High”) and you’ll be able to climb.

Best Artifacts and Ancient Rings for a Passive Magicka Bonus

Chronos (yes, that same water mage from the New Camp) has been selling rings since Chapter 1. You can also find some in chests, and if you’re lucky, you can loot them from NPCs’ pockets.

“Ring of Mana” gives +15 to your maximum mana. Its upgraded version, “Ring of Enlightenment,” adds +20 mana and +20 health. It can be picked up from Y’Beron’s room after his death (beginning of Chapter 3).

Mana ring artifact bonus

Amulets are easier. “Amulet of Mana” gives +30 mana. I recommend wearing it from the early stages. With it, you’ll be able to constantly use Fireball and Wind Fist without constantly running to potions. This, you’ll agree, is already serious.

Alchemy and the secrets of creating permanent spirit elixirs

The one-use Spirit Extracts and Essences scattered throughout the Colony’s chests quickly run out. Once all the stashes are cleared out, alchemy will become the mage’s only reliable source of energy. Your own hands and a cauldron will provide you with both combat consumables and a permanent increase to your mana bar.

Locations of all alchemy tables and recipes in the Colony

You can master advanced brewing in the Old Camp. The Fire Mage you need is in the nook to the right of the local temple, right next to Milten’s cell (though Torres, hanging around nearby, doesn’t teach the skill). If the basic theory isn’t enough, you’ll have to head to the New Camp for advanced recipes—Water Mage Riordian will readily sell you the necessary scrolls.

The process itself is simple:

  • Earn or purchase a perk from the instructor.
  • Stock your inventory with the necessary roots and herbs.
  • Go to the laboratory counter and craft a batch.

There are a total of 16 alchemy tables available on the remake map, so you won’t have to run to the same location every time.

Important note: you won’t be able to brew absolutely everything. The popular “Orcish Cure” and “Potion of Might,” which permanently increase Strength and Agility, only exist in pre-made form—the developers didn’t provide formulas for them. However, the entire mana restoration line, including the permanent “Elixir of Spirit,” can be crafted on the tabletop without any problems.

Table of effects and crafting methods for all magical potions

Elixir / Resource Name Effect and Benefit for the Mage How to Obtain in Game
“Spirit Elixir” Permanently increases maximum mana capacity Crafted independently at later stages of alchemy progression
“Elixir of Magical Energy” Instantly restores 70 mana points Bought from mage merchants or brewed using a recipe
Minor Mana Potion Budget consumable for long magical duels Basic craft from the cheapest common herbs
Roasted Meat and Cooking Slow energy regeneration outside combat Cooked at any campfire from carcasses of slain beasts

Players invest training points in the alchemy tree for the sake of the “Elixir of Spirit” It provides the same fixed stat boost as the rare Spirit Extract, but with one difference: you can craft dozens of these vials once you’ve accumulated the ingredients.

Where can I find rare Royal Herb and Marshweed for Mages

Royal herb alchemy ingredient

Collecting rare crafting components is no easy task, as the developers have hidden the most valuable plants in dangerous places:

  • Royal Herb. Look for it at the bottom of bodies of water. A large plantation of five bushes awaits you at the bottom of the lake near the New Camp, right in the northwestern part of the location. To collect it, first level up the diving skill with Homer, who guards the local dam.
  • Marshweed. The main resource of the Marsh Camp. The easiest way to obtain it is through quests from Snaph and local collectors—completing their tasks will reward you with fifty stalks.
  • Wild Mana Herbs. They grow along forest paths and in dark caves between key camps. Collect any glowing plant along the way—it won’t weigh you down, and at the alchemy table, the pile will make an impressive stack of jars.

By the way, two subtle life hacks will help you save precious ore on potions. First, a full night’s sleep in a bed in the remake now restores mana, contrary to the veterans’ habit of healing health this way. Second, regular food replenishes the resource quite well on the go. For a pure mage, who is always short on gold, this is an excellent way to conserve your budget.
