With less than five months to go until GTA 6’s release, Rockstar has finally stopped skimping on details. Based on two trailers, 63 official screenshots, and Ultimate Edition footage, VPESPORTS confirmed that the game already features 16 firearms. But the number isn’t the point. More importantly, you won’t be able to carry this entire arsenal around like in GTA V.

Rockstar is embracing realism. The weapon carry system in GTA 6 is almost a carbon copy of Red Dead Redemption 2. Players won’t be able to lug 50 guns around. Players will have to choose their loadout consciously before each mission. And this decision has already divided the fan community. Full list of confirmed weapons in GTA 6

A complete list of confirmed weapons in GTA 6

Category Weapon Real Prototype Note
Pistols Girardi ES9 Beretta 92FS Jason’s main pistol
Klose K17 Bersa Thunder 380 Lucia’s personal weapon
“Saro” Colt M1911 Engraving on the slide
Polymer Pistol Glock-style Seen in screenshots with a gold finish
Revolvers Mustang .357 Seen in a biker scene
Hawk & Little Morgan Ultimate Edition exclusive, Vice City style
SMGs MP5 HK MP5 Series classic
Micro SMG Will get a Tommy Vercetti shirt-style skin
SMG Palm print in the Vintage set
Rifles Carbine Rifle AR-15 One version like GTA V, another like GTA IV
Bolt-Action Rifle Scoped hunting rifle
Springfield M1A M1A Another hunting-style weapon
Assault Sniper Seen in one screenshot
Heavy Light Machine Gun / Combat MG Seen in trailer 2 with the Ammu-Nation owner
Grenade Launcher Used by Lucia during a chase
Shotguns Double-Barrel Shotgun New model, seen with a hunter and an alligator

An important detail that almost no one noticed: the picture of the cockpit rifle in the trailer and in the screenshots is different. In the trailer, Raul Bautista is holding a variant similar to the one in GTA V. In the screenshot, Jason is holding a model reminiscent of GTA IV. Most likely, there will be two Carbine Rifle variants with different performance characteristics in the game. Competitors haven’t figured this out, but we’re recording it as an exclusive fact.

Weapon Customization and Ultimate Edition Bonuses

GTA 6 weapon customization

In addition to the standard set, the Ultimate Edition gives players personalized versions of Jason and Lucia’s pistols, each with detailed engravings. These aren’t just cosmetics. For the first time in the series, Rockstar is integrating signature weapons into the story: the Hawk & Little Morgan revolvers are sourced “from the Vercetti estate”—a direct reference to Tommy Vercetti from Vice City.

But there’s a catch. Pre-orders of all editions will receive the Vintage Vice City Pack, a collection of items in the neon ’80s style. This pack includes skins for the Micro SMG and SMG. The weapons themselves, however, will be available to everyone—the special attachment will remain a privilege for those who splashed out.

Arsenal Limitations and Realistic Weapon Carrying

GTA 6 weapon system

The most controversial new feature is the limited carry capacity. In RDR2, players could only carry two large guns (a rifle and a shotgun) and two pistols. The rest was stored on their horse. In GTA 6, this function will be carried in the trunk of their car.

The official description of the Ultimate Edition mentions a “gun locker” in the garage, where you can “customize your loadout for different situations.” This means that before heading out on a job, you choose exactly what you’ll need. If you’re going to get into a firefight with a machine gun, grab an LMG. If you’re planning a stealthy heist, stick with a silenced pistol.

The community’s reaction? Mixed. Some fans are happy, saying, finally, realism and tactics instead of “pulling a flare gun out of your pocket.” Others are furious: the whole charm of GTA V was the ability to instantly switch from a pistol to a grenade launcher. “GTA Online later added gun lockers, but only three years after release, when the number of guns became critical,” notes 3DM. In GTA 6, this mechanic was rebuilt from the ground up. This means the approach to gunfights will change radically.

Incidentally, development footage leaked in 2022 showed Jason picking up and dropping rifles and carrying large guns on a sling across his back. At the time, many assumed it was just a test build. Now it’s clear—it was a demonstration of a new philosophy.

Comparison with GTA V: not just new guns, but new gameplay logic

Furthermore, GTA 6 changes not the weapon list, but the combat mechanics themselves. GTA V allowed the player to be a walking arsenal. GTA 6 transforms mission preparation into a strategic act. And this impacts everything:

  • Gunfights will become more intense—a poor weapon choice can’t be corrected in a second.
  • Heists will require planning: light weapons for stealth, heavy weapons for escape.
  • Exploration will take on a new meaning – the car becomes not just a means of transportation, but a mobile warehouse.

And yes, one more thing: in GTA 6, you can shoot underwater. For the first time in the series. Considering how many coastlines and open water there are in Leonid, this isn’t just a feature – it’s a gameplay shift.

Actual Number of Guns and Customization at Release

The 16 confirmed weapons are just what we were able to discern in official materials. Rockstar is almost certainly saving surprises for the launch trailer. In previous games, the final weapon count was at least twice the pre-release lists.

What we do know for sure: there will be melee weapons in the game. Screenshots show a baseball bat, a hammer, a pool cue, and a golf club. Whether they will be combat-ready or purely decorative remains a mystery. Additionally, weapon customization is returning. Magazines, scopes, muzzle attachments, attachments, tints, liveries, and special ammo types. All of this was present in GTA V, but in GTA 6, judging by the hints, it will be deeper and more detailed.

What’s next?

The next wave of information will likely be a gameplay trailer or a full-fledged preview from gaming publications. The weapon system will be a major topic of discussion—it’s too different from what fans are used to. Personally, I think Rockstar has taken a risky, but correct, course. GTA V was about freedom. GTA 6 is about choice. And that choice is the real draw.
