While other publishers are competing to see who gets more real advertising into their games, Rockstar Games is going the opposite way. The head of Take-Two Interactive, Strauss Zelnick, has officially confirmed that there will be no product placement or partnerships with real brands in GTA 6. At all.

The statement was made at the iicon conference in Las Vegas, where Zelnick bluntly said that fans should not expect any integrations with real trademarks. The reason is simple and elegant at the same time: such brands simply do not exist in the GTA world.

GTA 6 and Real Brands: No McDonald’s in Vice City

According to Zelnick, the team must remain faithful to intellectual property and its players: consumers intuitively feel the difference between what is real and what is not real. They will always understand this.

In the case of GTA, the logic is ironclad: This is a fictional world, and everything in it is fictional. Therefore, the company does not even risk making brand partnerships, because all brands are invented. “I think it keeps us clean,” he added.

“All brands are made up”: why Take-Two abandoned product placement in GTA 6

These are not just beautiful words. Over the decades, the series has built a whole universe of fictitious trademarks that have become an integral part of its DNA:

  • Sprunk — a parody of Sprite and other sodas
  • Burger Shot — fast food satire on McDonald’s and Burger King
  • Cluckin’ Bell is an obvious nod to Taco Bell and KFC
  • Pißwasser — a crude parody of cheap beer
  • Lifeinvader (GTA 5) — Facebook in the Rockstar world, with all its dark sides

These stamps are not just decorations. They are embedded in missions, in-game commercials, radio stations, and the overall satirical atmosphere of the series.

Product placement in games — why it’s almost always a failure

Zelnick also stressed that if you put too much pressure on product placement, it will inevitably be perceived as a disaster. He gave an example of a television series—without naming it—where an obsessively sticking out can of a drink in the frame turned out to be “too much.” Many immediately remembered the scene with New Coke from “Very Strange Cases”.

At the same time, other Take-Two franchises, in particular the NBA 2K series, will continue to use advertising integrations with real brands, sponsorship and partnerships. But GTA is a different story. The rules are different here.

GTA 6 fans’ reaction and the game’s release date

The reaction of the gaming community was predictable: relief and approval. On Reddit, users mostly reacted positively to Take-Two’s decision, noting that fictional brands are a key part of the series’ humor, giving Rockstar much more creative freedom.

Indeed, when the whole world is a parody, the real Nike logo on the shop window would look like a foreign body. Satire works precisely because it is total.

GTA 6 will be released on November 19th for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The exact price has not yet been announced, but Zelnik previously promised that it would be “reasonable.”
