GTA 6 sets new price standard: $100 Ultimate Edition and industry fallout - Image 1

Grand Theft Auto 6 is already reaping a harvest of pre-orders—and that’s not even the release date. Last week’s launch instantly propelled the game to the top of the US PS Store, even in its most expensive version. The $100 Ultimate Edition (almost 8,000 rubles at the current exchange rate) took first place in the charts. Surprising? Hardly.

GTA 6 is a phenomenon that transcends the gaming industry. Friends who keep their PS5 solely as a decoration and don’t even play free-to-play shooters on it have already pre-ordered it. Simply because it’s GTA. They’ve been saving up since December of last year, just like me, by the way. I also bought the Ultimate Edition, although now I’ll have to save up for The Witcher 4—but that’s another story.

The most interesting thing isn’t even the records, but the price signal. Take-Two priced the base version at $80, $10 above the industry standard of $70. This isn’t a coincidence—Nintendo already tested this bar with Mario Kart World. Now analysts are unanimously declaring that the industry is shifting to a tiered economy, where a few superhits dictate the price, and the rest are forced to adapt. David Cole of DFC Intelligence puts it bluntly: only a handful of premium games will justify such a price tag. GTA and Mario are the exceptions. For other publishers, this ploy could backfire. Joost van Druijnen, a gaming market expert, warns: trying to charge $80 for a mediocre product will end in failure.

We’ve already seen this with Microsoft. They raised the price of The Outer Worlds 2 to $79.99—and quickly lowered it back to $69.99. Sales were still weak. Games are becoming a luxury category, where the winner takes all. GTA 6 raises the bar once again, and those who manage to surpass it will gain a years-long lead over the competition. Those who don’t will need to find new distribution channels, discounts, and bundle deals to reach gamers where blockbusters fail. And yes, the prices in rubles are approximate, based on a rate of 80 rubles to the dollar—actual receipts in the Russian PS Store may surprise you.
