The Game Awards 2025 ended with the most anticipated announcement, which, it seems, was supposed to be an industrial earthquake. Wildlight Entertainment Studio, created by veterans of Apex Legends and Titanfall (Respawn Entertainment), has officially unveiled its first game: Highguard. Well, it’s worth admitting that this was not just an announcement, but a high-profile application for reformatting the entire FPS shooter market.

HighGuard: PvP Shooter from ex-Respawn and Release Date
In truth, the nearly three-minute trailer revealed something that instantly makes analysts cross their fingers. Highguard is positioned as a “raid PvP shooter”. And that’s where the fun comes in.: This is not a traditional Team Deathmatch, not a battle royale, and not a Heroic Shooter in its purest form. It looks like the teams will be fighting for possession of the Shieldbreaker to break into enemy bases, destroy them, and take over territory on this mythical continent.
And what’s next? The HighGuard release date is set for January 26, 2026. This date is worth paying special attention to, because Wildlight Entertainment is abandoning early access in favor of a full-fledged free-to-Play release on all major platforms: PC, Xbox Series X|S and PS5. This, in my opinion, is a pure financial incentive aimed at instantly capturing the maximum audience.
Hybrid Structure: HighGuard Gameplay – A Challenge to the FPS Genre from the Creators of Apex and Titanfall
How much can Highguard change the market? On the Steam page, it is called the brainchild of the “Creators of Apex Legends Global Series and Titanfall” — and this, of course, is not just a marketing ploy, but a direct reference to their skill in creating dynamic gameplay.

The gameplay shown in the trailer is really creatively unbalanced:
-
Mobility: Riding animals are shown for fast movement, which is crucial for the raid format.
-
Stylistic Dissonance: The game combines medieval and modern weapons elements.
-
Cross-platform Dominance: The announced cross-platform multiplayer not only expands the audience, but also instantly creates a gigantic competitive landscape.
This hybrid approach — using atypical Guardian abilities and raid structure —is a direct challenge to market-dominant formats such as Battle royales (Fortnite) and tactical shooters (VALORANT). Highguard is trying to carve out a unique place for itself, moving away from template monetization and mechanics.
Esports Charge: Can PVP FPS HighGuard Create a Sustainable ecosystem?
And that’s where we come to the most interesting part: will Highguard be able to create a sustainable esports ecosystem? At the moment, Wildlight Studio does not give clear instructions on this matter. And it’s annoying.
Without a doubt, the unique gameplay with target capture and raids sets it apart. This is not just a team battle, but a strategic penetration that, with proper regulatory oversight from the publisher, can become an ideal basis for a competitive scene. However, in truth, the fate of Highguard in esports depends on two factors.:
Popularity: How viral will the Free-to-Play release become in January 2026? Mass participation is the first condition for sponsorship and tournaments.
The Developers vision: Will the creators want to develop the game as a competitive discipline? If they rely solely on the Battle Pass and in-game purchases without the support of professional leagues, then the potential will remain unfulfilled.
The impact of Highguard on the FPS game market can be significant. A hybrid structure, Free-to-Play, and a bet on strategic raids can become a new vector for the development of the genre, which will force even Riot Games and Epic Games to reconsider their tactical transformations.
