Game industry veteran Laura Fryer, who was instrumental in the creation of the very first Xbox, released a video in which she unvarnishedly described the inner workings of mass layoffs at major corporations. On July 7, 2026, Microsoft announced it would lay off 4,800 employees worldwide—approximately 2.1% of its entire workforce. Xbox was the primary target: 3,200 jobs—a fifth of the entire console team—were cut. Of these, 1,600 people were informed of their layoffs immediately; the rest will be informed of their fate within the next year. Fryer, who was one of the project’s main skeptics back in 2001, now bitterly notes that her concerns are returning with a vengeance.

Who is Laura Fryer and why is her video about Xbox layoffs important?

Fryer is more than just a former producer. She is one of the founders of Xbox, a veteran since 1995, and the executive producer of Gears of War. In a recent video published in June 2026, she describes how management has been disguising impending layoffs for years: conference rooms are booked on shared calendars as routine meetings, so that the press doesn’t get a single piece of evidence.

“I was one of the biggest skeptics on the team when we started,” says Fryer. “I felt like we were abandoning the most successful gaming platform in the world for a risky bet we weren’t prepared for.”

They didn’t listen to her then. Now, 25 years later, her words sound prophetic. The hardware crisis caused by the AI craze has driven component prices skyrocket. The traditional Xbox model, she says, is bursting at the seams.

What will happen to Double Fine studios Ninja Theory and Undead Labs?

The restructuring affected more than just the rank-and-file employees—there were changes at the studio level as well. Four teams are officially leaving Xbox. Double Fine (Psychonauts) and Compulsion Games (South of Midnight) are regaining their independence. The studios are going private, taking back their intellectual property rights and funding for future projects.

Ninja Theory (Hellblade) and Undead Labs (State of Decay) have been auctioned off. The new owners have not yet been revealed. Both studios have received guaranteed funding to finish Senua and State of Decay 3.

Arkane Lyon (Dishonored, Deathloop, Blade) is the most uncertain story. The studio has entered into mandatory consultations with the French Works Council to evaluate “strategic options.” Whether this means sale, closure, or rescue remains unclear.

The History of Ensemble Studios and Why Xbox CEO Shut It Down?

In her video, Frayer drew a chilling parallel with the past. She’s referring to the closure of Ensemble Studios, the legendary team that brought the world Age of Empires. In 2008, the studio was working on the ambitious Halo MMO, codenamed “Titan.” Then-Xbox CEO Don Mattrick issued an ultimatum: a three-year release. The studio estimated a three-and-a-half-year deadline. When Mattrick refused, the project was canceled, and Ensemble was shuttered in January 2009.

Why was Mattrick in such a rush? According to former developer Sandy Petersen (co-creator of DOOM and Quake), it all came down to a personal bonus. Mattrick’s promotional bonus was tied to Microsoft’s game revenue over a three-year period. “Don Mattrick killed Ensemble Studios entirely for selfish reasons,” Petersen claims. “He destroyed the most profitable studio for his own gain.”

And then came the twist. Ensemble’s managers, upon learning of the deal, refused to betray their team. Every single executive resigned on the spot. Thanks to this, the ordinary employees received a severance package equal to eight times their monthly salary. A third of the team founded Robot Entertainment and immediately received a publishing contract from… Microsoft. The irony of fate.

Why Layoffs in the Gaming Industry Have Become a Major Problem

Fryer calls widespread layoffs the “epidemic” of our time. And her words aren’t just sentimental. The numbers speak for themselves: 4,800 people at Microsoft, 3,200 at Xbox alone. This is the largest restructuring in console history. The industry is in turmoil, and companies are looking for ways to cut costs. Developers are proving to be the easiest expense.

“The gaming industry is still full of passionate, talented people,” says Fryer. “Companies that learn this lesson and start treating people as their most important asset, not a line item, will build stronger and more resilient studios.”

What’s next for Microsoft Xbox and developers?

Readers should keep their finger on the pulse:

  • Who will be the new owners of Ninja Theory and Undead Labs? The announcement could explode at any moment.
  • What fate awaits Arkane Lyon? Consultations with the Works Council are the last call before the final decision.
  • The remaining 1,600 Xbox employees still don’t know whether they will stay or not. The sword of Damocles still hangs over their heads.

Laura Fryer’s story isn’t just a nostalgic rant. It’s a warning to an industry that has forgotten that games are made by people, not Excel spreadsheets. And if Microsoft and other corporations don’t reassess their priorities, we risk losing more than just jobs—we risk losing the very spirit of gaming culture.
