Mojang Studios has decided to slightly polish up the upcoming Chaos Cubed update for Minecraft Java Edition—but not without some unexpected rollbacks. In the latest test build (version 26.2), the developers completely removed the peer-to-peer system. The one that was supposed to allow players to connect directly to each other, bypassing a server. Why? It didn’t work out.

The studio admits that P2P in its current state doesn’t provide the experience they want to offer fans. Connections were unstable, and the developers aren’t ready to release a feature that’s incomplete. “We’re removing P2P from a recent snapshot,” Mojang explained. “The feature didn’t perform as expected for all players.” A strict, but correct decision: better to roll back than face a wave of complaints.

Reasons for P2P Discontinuation in Mojang’s Chaos Cubed Update

Officially, Mojang attributed the removal of P2P in Java Edition to a simple “unstable connection”—but under the hood, things were far more dramatic. The developers simply couldn’t handle the TURN server infrastructure for a colossal 212 million player base, risking the loss of their audience’s IP addresses to DDoS attacks.

Snapshot 7 Telemetry Analysis and ICE CONNECT Errors

The true scale of the technical issues is revealed in the Snapshot 7 patch notes. The studio collected interesting telemetry data on timings: p2p_connection_signaling_time_ms, p2p_connection_ice_connect_time_ms, and p2p_connection_total_time_ms. Tellingly, the failure_stage log consistently returned SIGNALING, ICE_CONNECT, and TIMEOUT statuses. The connection didn’t fail mid-session. It died right at the start, unable to withstand even a basic handshake.

ICE and WebRTC Protocol Issues in Minecraft Multiplayer

All this network magic was built on the ICE (Interactive Connectivity Establishment) protocol. Roughly speaking, it’s the foundation of classic WebRTC applications like Google Meet. The system works in three stages:

  • First, the signaling server introduces clients to each other.
  • Then, STUN helps them discover public IP addresses.
  • If ports are closed, the backup TURN route takes over.

This backup route became the main bottleneck in the system.

The Impact of Symmetric NAT on Mojang’s TURN Servers

Symmetric NAT is now widely used by mobile providers and corporate network administrators. In such environments, a firewall completely blocks direct connections. TURN ceases to be an option and becomes a necessity.

NAT Types and P2P Connection

NAT Type Direct P2P via STUN TURN Required
Full Cone Works No
Restricted Cone Works No
Port-Restricted Cone Works No
Symmetric Does not work Yes

For a platform of this size, this “backup” generates thousands of heavy sessions every second. Apparently, the servers are simply suffocated by the data flow. Massive timeout errors clearly indicate a failed stress test.

Security Risks and Protecting Minecraft Players’ IP Addresses

There’s also a subtle but critical security nuance. A successful direct connection without a relay instantly de-anonymizes your real IP addresses. For a casual LAN game, this is perfectly fine—but on the global network, you’re opening yourself up to DDoS attacks. Rolling out such a feature without a rock-solid TURN node would mean leaving the community unprotected. It seems the studio recognized the risks in time and abandoned the failed experiment.

Patch 26.2 Patch Notes and New Sounds

However, Patch 26.2 isn’t all about losses. There are plenty of fixes: bugs have been patched, textures and models have been slightly tweaked, the interface has been refreshed, and even some sounds have been changed. These are nice little touches that add up to a smoother experience. As a reminder, Minecraft Java Edition is a PC exclusive. If you’re on this platform, participation in testing the update is open. All you need to do is launch the official launcher and select the latest pre-release version.

Chaos Cubed Release Date and New Sulfur Cube Mobs

When can we expect the final release of Chaos Cubed? Mojang is keeping mum for now. But the latest version is already marked as Pre Release, a sure sign that the release is coming soon. The patch’s main new features are the sulfur cave biome and a new mob, the sulfur cube. It sounds unusual, and fans are already sharpening their pickaxes.
