CD Projekt RED is preparing a major bombshell for Gamescom: the Songs of the Past story expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be released in 2027 exclusively on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. The developers are completely burning bridges with the previous generation of consoles, leaving PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and classic Nintendo Switch owners behind. The premiere will take place soon at the Cologne trade show in just two days.

Strict platform selection: why Songs of the Past will outperform previous consoles

Past-gen players have long hoped that the Poles would be able to handle the release on older chips, as they did with the original and the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions. That won’t be the case. The development relies on current technological standards, which is why building the game on outdated architectures was deemed pointless.
The technical barrier won’t just affect console players:

  • The PC version will finally drop support for the aging Windows 10, switching the build to Windows 11.
  • Growing hardware requirements will force many gamers to upgrade their components.
  • The developers are placing a key emphasis on advanced visuals, which past-gen simply can’t deliver.

The White Wolf’s Final Chord

The plot of Songs of the Past is intended to complete Geralt’s story and pave the way for the next trilogy. CD Projekt RED has no intention of making things easier for itself with cross-gen compromises for the sake of immediate gain. The release is scheduled for 2027, and for many fans, this will be a key reason to upgrade their hardware. The upcoming presentation at Gamescom will be the first real opportunity to assess the scale of the return to Neverland.
