Developers CD Projekt RED have recruited a top game designer to work on the upcoming action RPG The Witcher 4. Jacqueline Kate Salsman, who previously worked as a senior combat designer at Santa Monica Studio, has joined the Polish team. She contributed to the heart-pounding action in God of War and God of War Ragnarok, and will now apply her extensive experience to the new Witcher saga.

Jacqueline Kate Salsman has joined CD Projekt RED to work on the new Witcher.

The Poles continue to selectively assemble their “dream team,” luring valuable talent from the world’s largest studios. The arrival of a specialist like Jacqueline Kate Salsman seems a logical and promising move, given the series’ past problems. Apparently, management is placing a huge emphasis on a radical overhaul of key gameplay mechanics, as the developer has taken the position of lead game design expert at CD Projekt RED.

Fans of the franchise will surely breathe a sigh of relief. Let’s be honest: while the quests, world-building, and characters in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt were exemplary, the game’s enemy click-through and overall combat system have garnered tons of criticism over the years. Battles clearly lacked weight, dynamics, and tactical depth.

Why The Witcher 4’s combat system will be improved thanks to the creators of God of War

The new employee’s experience working on the reboot of Kratos’ adventures could guarantee a qualitative leap for the project. Santa Monica Studio’s action games are renowned for their rich, responsive, and incredibly effective third-person combat mechanics. There, every axe strike feels physical, and the combination of runes and abilities works like a single, well-oiled machine.

Of particular interest is the fact that, according to numerous rumors and hints, Ciri is set to be the central figure of the new story. Ciri’s fighting style is radically different from the ponderous and methodical techniques of Geralt of Rivia. Her unique abilities offer the developers incredible scope for creativity.

What exactly can you expect from the updated gameplay:

  • Lightning-fast teleports: Signature movements through space will make encounters with enemies vertical and swift.
  • Superhuman speed: Combat will become more demanding in terms of timing and positioning on the battlefield.
  • Unique magical skills: The abilities of the Elder Blood allow you to close distances and effectively combine series of sword strikes.

With such a game designer background, the new combat system has every chance of being not just spectacular but also truly profound. The launch of the new trilogy on Unreal Engine 5 promises to be technologically advanced at the very least, and with the involvement of industry veterans, it will also be gameplay-calibrated. We will continue to monitor the personnel changes at the Polish studio.
