In an exclusive interview with TheGamer, Marvel’s Wolverine game director Mike Daly stated that Insomniac Games is “used” to online backlash—it’s “part and parcel of developing these kinds of games,” he said. The studio that brought the world Spider-Man has faced a wave of criticism for its new PS5 exclusive, and Daly remains icy-faced.

The hype around Wolverine was colossal. Insomniac had already proven its mastery with Spider-Man, and fans wondered how the studio would outdo itself with a more mature and violent character. However, over time, excitement gave way to skepticism—signs of online activity turned into a barrage of criticism. Players were outraged by PlayStation’s physical release policy and the more linear gameplay compared to the open world of Spider-Man. It’s worth noting that the game’s buzz intensified after the trailer was revealed at D23, where Logan was revealed in all his dark glory.

Daly, however, remains unfazed. He recalled that Insomniac had already gone through a similar experience while working on Spider-Man—and it didn’t stop them from creating a game loved by millions. “There will always be people looking for something to complain about,” the game director philosophically remarked. His position is simple: the studio isn’t trying to please every dissatisfied player. “Our real goal is to focus entirely on creating the best game for this character.”

Developing a game based on an iconic character and a major exclusive inevitably brings with it some negativity—that’s a given. Daly advised against jumping to conclusions and to wait until they get to know the project firsthand. He assured that Insomniac “absolutely nailed it” with Logan’s portrayal. Incidentally, Marvel’s Wolverine is scheduled for release on September 15th—a date that players will likely be able to judge for themselves whether the studio was right.

A full preview and an in-depth interview with the game director will be released later. In the meantime, Insomniac continues to flesh out its project—and judging by Daly’s tone, neither criticism nor online gossip will deter the studio from its course.
