Horizon fans will have to be patient—the next single-player installment in the Guerrilla Games franchise is still in such an early stage that insiders estimate its release is years away. According to a Bloomberg report, only a small team at the studio is working on the new story-driven game, with all of its core resources having been focused on another project for the past few years.
This refers to Horizon Hunters Gathering, a co-op action game announced by Guerrilla in February 2026. It would have involved three players cooperatively hunting mechanical beasts, choosing heroes with different combat styles and unique abilities. However, after two public tests in the spring, the developers suddenly went silent. And the reason is now clear: the community reaction was so negative that Sony made a drastic decision.
According to respected Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, Horizon Hunters Gathering has been relaunched from scratch. The Guerrilla team has been working on the new version since June. The main change is the complete abandonment of live-service mechanics in favor of a more traditional co-op adventure with a story mode and a much smaller scale. The developers are infusing the game with new ideas, removing everything that turned off testers. And they have a strict deadline: they need to confidently present the updated version to management by December, lest the project be scrapped. The new approach is to focus on a playable and balanced co-op experience rather than an endless stream of content.
Some Guerrilla staff have already been transferred to another, currently classified project, which will also be evaluated at the end of the year. This suggests that the studio is redistributing resources in an attempt to salvage the situation.
At the same time, the franchise still has other areas of focus. The MMORPG Horizon Steel Frontiers, a collaboration between Guerrilla and the Korean giant NCSoft, is planned for next year. However, even this wasn’t without a change in plans: the release was pushed back from 2026 to the first half of 2027. The project is being developed using Unreal Engine 5, not the native Decima engine, and a PS5 version hasn’t yet been confirmed—the game is aimed at PC and mobile devices.
A Horizon film is also in production—shooting is scheduled for 2026, with a premiere expected in 2027.
According to available information, the screenwriters haven’t considered developing the series without Lance Reddick, whose voice has forever been etched in fans’ memories. “We just miss him,” they admitted in an interview.
Therefore, a new single-player Horizon game isn’t expected anytime soon. Guerrilla hasn’t even entered full production yet, and all its efforts are focused on saving Horizon Hunters Gathering. If the studio fails to succeed with the reboot by December, the franchise will face serious upheaval.
