July 28, 2026—a date Master Chief fans have penciled into their calendars. On that day, Halo: Campaign Evolved, a full-fledged remake of the cult shooter powered by Unreal Engine 5, will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Premium Edition owners are already exploring the ring—Early Access began on July 23. The question on everyone’s mind right now is: which platform does the remake look and play best on? Technical experts from ElAnalistaDeBits and Digital Foundry have already conducted detailed analyses. Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries) completely ported the game to Unreal Engine 5, turning the remaster into a virtually new game. We’ve compiled their findings into a coherent picture and added some information that competitors haven’t mentioned.

Comparison of Halo Campaign Evolved on PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X offer two classic graphics modes. Quality Mode emphasizes maximum resolution and advanced visual effects, but the frame rate is locked at 30 FPS. Performance Mode increases the frame rate to 60 FPS, but sacrifices detail clarity. Micro-stuttering is observed in some campaign scenes, but according to testing, it’s not fatal.

The PS5 Pro, however, is a completely different story. The console delivers a more stable frame rate without reducing resolution or cutting down on advanced effects. The PS5 Pro offers the best compromise among all desktop devices.

The main factor is Sony’s upscaling technology. The PS5 Pro uses PSSR2 (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution 2), which effectively suppresses the noisy image and flickering typical of Unreal Engine 5. Digital Foundry confirms: PSSR2 removes fine flimmering and visual noise better than reconstruction technologies on other consoles. The PS5 Pro delivers the cleanest console image. It’s a clear contender for the title of best console version.

Overview of Halo Campaign Evolved PC Graphics with Unreal Engine 5

Graphics Halo Campaign Evolved

On PC, the game truly shines—provided you have the appropriate configuration. Combined with NVIDIA RTX 50-series graphics cards and DLSS, the remake runs at maximum graphics settings, achieving very high frame rates.

Halo: Campaign Evolved uses Unreal Engine 5.5.4.0, giving the game a full-fledged technological upgrade rather than a simple upgrade to a new engine. The game utilizes hardware-accelerated Lumens with ray tracing and MegaLights technology, which allows for significantly more light sources without sacrificing performance. Objects are built using Nanite geometry—millions of polygons—without any FPS drop. Emissive surfaces, such as the light bridge shield or gravity shafts, emit realistic dynamic lighting. Light reflects correctly off surfaces, and shadows remain stable even at great distances.

But there’s a downside. Unreal Engine 5 introduces artifacts: sparkling, bubbling, and temporal noise are visible in dark scenes due to Lumen Denoising. These effects are noticeable even on a powerful PC. Furthermore, chromatic aberration and film grain are now forced on and cannot be disabled even in the PC settings. Players are already actively searching for ways to circumvent this limitation.

Optimal Graphics Settings for Halo Remake Low vs Ultra

A PC Gamer journalist conducted an interesting experiment: the visual difference between Ultra and Low in Halo: Campaign Evolved was so insignificant that most players won’t notice it. On a system with an RTX 4070 Super, maximum settings provide improved lighting, shadows, and foliage detail—but at the cost of about a 20% performance loss.

PC Gamer’s conclusion: the Low preset is the most reasonable choice. It preserves the bulk of visual quality but significantly increases the frame rate, especially in fast-paced scenes. The game is becoming a rare example of a modern title where switching from Ultra to Low has virtually no impact on image quality, but delivers noticeably smoother gameplay.

Halo Campaign Evolved PC and Steam Deck Benchmarks

The PC version leaves a generally good impression, but there are some annoying nuances. On some test systems, the Halo theme would loop endlessly in the first chapter—an annoying bug that the developers should fix.

The situation is more complicated with portable devices. The minimum system requirements—Intel Core i7-10700K and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Super—are significantly more powerful than what the Steam Deck and base ROG Ally offer. On the Steam Deck, the game is “validated” (green check mark), but in large battles and open areas, the frame rate drops to 24 FPS. On Very Low with TSR upscaling, you can maintain 30 FPS most of the time, but dips are inevitable. On the ROG Ally X, the situation is slightly better: with the FSR set to “High,” the frame rate jumps to 50 FPS, but flickering pixelation appears. IGN specifically recommends against playing Halo: Campaign Evolved on portable devices.

Gameplay Changes and New Features in the Halo Remake

Halo Studios didn’t stop at visual polish. This is a full-fledged remake and HD remaster. Key changes:

  • Reworked “Library” level – instead of monotonous, repetitive corridors, the mission now moves from top to bottom through a tower with new rooms, minibosses, and lightbridge puzzles.
  • Three completely new campaign missions with Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson.
  • Nine new weapons from later games in the series.
  • Four-player co-op with crossplay across all platforms.
  • Cross-progression – achievements and saves sync across platforms.
  • Available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass from day one.

Which Platform Is Best for Halo Campaign Evolved

Platform Price Modes Frame Rate Image Quality Stability Early Access
PS5 Pro $49.99 Quality / Performance 30 / 60 FPS Cleanest console image (PSSR2) High Premium Edition
Xbox Series X $49.99 Quality / Performance 30 / 60 FPS Good, but inferior to PS5 Pro Medium (micro-stuttering) Premium Edition
PC (RTX 50) $49.99 Full freedom 60+ (DLSS) Maximum quality, UE5 at full power Depends on config Premium Edition
Steam Deck $49.99 Very Low + TSR ~30 FPS (with drops) Compromise Low (frequent drops) Premium Edition

If you have a PS5 Pro, get it without a second thought. It’s the best console version with the perfect balance of graphics and performance.

If you have a powerful PC, you’ll get maximum freedom: unlimited FPS, any settings, support for DLSS, FSR, and XeSS. This is where Unreal Engine 5 truly unleashes its potential.

If you have an Xbox Series X, the version is good, but inferior to the PS5 Pro in terms of image clarity. Performance mode delivers 60 FPS, but with minor stutters.

If you have a Steam Deck or ROG Ally, be prepared for compromises. Upscaling on Very Low is playable, but large battles will suffer a FPS drop.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a rare example of a remake that reimagines the original game from the ground up, rather than limiting itself to updated graphics. The transition to Unreal Engine 5 gave the studio something the Slipspace Engine couldn’t offer: freedom. Yes, there are some rough edges: forced post-effects, Lumen noise in dark scenes, and issues on portable devices. But overall, Halo Studios nailed it. Master Chief is back – and looking better than ever.
