Alkimia Interactive has finally rolled out the first major update for Gothic Remake. Patch 1.0.1 is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S. The point is, it’s not just a couple of important fixes—the developers have seriously addressed the most pressing issues that fans have been complaining about since launch.

The main story highlight: a bug that prevented players from joining the Fire Mage faction has been fixed. Seriously, imagine wanting to become a fire mage, but the game blocks you. Now you can. But more importantly, the lockpicking mechanics have been reworked. The community complained that it was too difficult and unintuitive. We’ve added a lock difficulty indicator—even before you break the lockpick.

Over a dozen stability fixes. Finally, crashes on DLSS and FSR have been fixed. Another annoying issue: previously, the main menu buttons would flicker until the save was completed, which would ruin saves. This has been fixed. The Horn now actually helps against the Troll (instead of just standing there). Economic exploits have been cut, closing the monetary gaps. Melee: improved target acquisition, wind magic and blunt weapons are now more effective against the Stone Golem. Gomez’s health and resistance have been increased—they didn’t make him a boss for nothing.

The sound has also been improved, but that’s just a nice touch.

What has changed in practice since patch 1.0.1?

Showcase lists are one thing. How does the update feel?

Gothic Remake patch gameplay

VPEsports tested the patch on a PS5 Pro and a powerful PC (RTX 4070, 32 GB RAM). First: frame rate stability. In the Old Camp, the PS5 used to have frame rates dips to 45 fps, but now it’s a stable 60 fps. On PC, it’s 80-90 fps in the same scenes. DLSS no longer crashes, and the image is smooth.

Lockpicking is a complete game. You used to dabble with a lockpick, getting frustrated. Now you can see the difficulty level right away. Simple locks open in two tries, complex ones in four or five. The mechanics still require precision, but they’re no longer a nuisance. Players on the forums are writing, “Finally, you can lockpick without swearing.”

Performance and Bugs:

  • FSR and DLSS — zero crashes in 6 hours of testing. Previously, the game would crash when switching modes.
  • Saves — menu buttons no longer freeze, saves are not corrupted. I tested it by forcing a save during battle — everything is fine.
  • Troll fight – Gorn really aggroes and deals damage. Previously, he just ran around. Now the fight is easier and more logical.

Economic exploits – the developers closed the loophole with endlessly selling wolf pelts to the vendor in the New Camp. You can’t make money anymore, but the balance has become fairer.

Among the downsides that haven’t been fixed yet: on Xbox Series S, the sound sometimes disappears during cutscenes. On PC, with very old NVIDIA drivers (versions before 535), the mouse cursor may freeze in the inventory. Alkimia knows; they say the next patch will fix this too.

Is it worth updating right now? Definitely. Patch 1.0.1 isn’t just cosmetic. The game has become more stable, hacking is playable, and Fire Mages are available. Gothic Remake finally feels like what everyone was expecting.
