Sony and Santa Monica Studio have officially confirmed the release date of God of War: Laufey – the game will launch on February 16, 2027, exclusively on PS5. The announcement was made famous at the San Diego Comic-Con panel, where the developers not only revealed the release window but also shared new details about the plot, cast, and, most importantly, lifted the curtain on the future of the entire franchise. Cory Barlog, creative director at Santa Monica, stated that after Laufey, we’ll be getting another Kratos game – and it will be a direct continuation of the events of this spin-off. We’ll tell you everything in order.

God of War Laufey Cast and Roles

The casting of God of War Laufey isn’t just a collection of star names, but a testament to how seriously the studio approached the character’s portrayal. Faye, whom we only knew from memories and secret inscriptions, finally has a voice and a face.

God of War Faye

Deborah Ann Woll as Faye

Deborah Ann Woll, familiar to audiences from Daredevil and True Blood, returns as Faye, not only voicing the character but also handling all the motion capture. The actress described her character as a “reluctant heroine” in the vein of John McClane from Die Hard: she didn’t seek out adventure, but when the situation called for it, she took matters into her own hands. Does her performance exceed fans’ expectations? Judging by the first stills from the private screening, yes, and by a long shot.

Jack Quaid voices Frank the Cube

Actor Jack Quaid (The Boys) voices a character named Frank—not a human, but a sentient cube who has lost his memory of his past. Quaid, a longtime PlayStation fan, admitted he never even considered turning down the role: “When they told me I was going to be a cube, I said, ‘Okay, I’ll jump.'” Frank isn’t a random detail: according to Barlog, the character was in the drafts from the very beginning and will be key to expanding the universe. In gameplay, the cube will aid in combat, movement, and puzzle solving—so it’s not just a comedic element, but a fully-fledged tool.

Christopher Judge and the Return of Kratos

Christopher Judge is once again voicing Kratos, and his quote about how his relationship with Faye was the starting point for hope and redemption resonates like a layer of the series’ new philosophy. Perlina Lau has also joined the cast, playing the enigmatic Rue, about whom little is known yet. But even these names make it clear: Santa Monica has assembled a powerful ensemble.

Laufey’s Connection to the New God of War

The main news that excited the community wasn’t just the spin-off, but also the direct promise of a follow-up game starring Kratos. Barlog stated at the panel:

“We can’t stop telling stories about the big guy.”

And so begins the long haul.

A Direct Continuation of Kratos’s Story

The next game in the series, which will release after Laufey, will be directly connected to the events of the spin-off. This means Faye’s story won’t remain an isolated episode—it will serve as a bridge to Kratos’s next adventure. The date and platform haven’t been announced yet, but given that Laufey is exclusive to PS5, it’s logical to assume the future title will also be available on the same platform. Incidentally, the game is already available to wishlist on the PlayStation Store—a great opportunity to seize the moment if you don’t want to miss the release.

Greek Trilogy Remake in Development

Ariel Lawrence, the studio’s game director, added that plans for Kratos are “many and varied.” Polygon reports that a remake of the Greek God of War trilogy is in development alongside Laufey’s. So, old-school fans are in for a double treat: a return to the roots and a new twist on the Norse saga.

God of War Laufey Plot and Setting

If you thought the spin-off would simply be a prequel, Santa Monica has a surprise in store. The action takes place after Faye’s death at the beginning of God of War (2018)—she awakens in an afterlife called Euryuen, where all the pantheons of gods intersect. Her mission is to protect the plans she left for Kratos and Atreus from new threats.

The Afterlife of Everyuen and the New Gods

Everyuen isn’t just another Niflheim. It’s a place where deities from cultures far beyond Greece and Scandinavia converge. The developers hinted at a diverse pantheon, and the combat system has become noticeably faster—presumably to accommodate new, more agile enemies. It seems Laufey isn’t afraid to experiment with the setting, and this adds a fresh feel to the game that fans have been craving.

Bottom Line: God of War Laufey will be released on February 16, 2027, on PS5 (physical copies will also be available, despite rumors of discs being scrapped). Faye’s story is key to the future of the entire series, paving the way for new characters, gameplay innovations, and a global expansion of the universe. Add the game to your wishlist and stay tuned—the release is just over six months away.
