Pearl Abyss has officially confirmed the development of the first story DLC for *Crimson Desert*. Alongside the expansion, the studio unveiled a roadmap of free updates for the summer of 2026, featuring narrative adjustments, new combat challenges, and the long-awaited cross-save functionality across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. While specific DLC details remain under wraps, some information has already been revealed.

The most intriguing aspect is Pearl Abyss’s promise of a “completely new form of gameplay” within the game’s vast open world. The developers describe the expansion as a “significant addition to your journey”—and they mean it literally. According to the studio, the DLC is currently in the concept and quality assessment phase, with a release scheduled for sometime before the end of 2026.

Where is the discrepancy? In a June developer update, Pearl Abyss stated they “could not share details.” However, following the Q2 financial report in August, it was revealed that a specific release window had already been set. Details regarding content, pricing, and the exact release date will be disclosed in the third quarter of 2026—meaning by September 30. For now, the studio is focusing entirely on the first DLC and ensuring its quality.

Meanwhile, free updates scheduled for June through September are already on the way. Key changes include:

  • Cross-save — continue your journey across Pywel on different platforms by linking your account.
  • Story improvements — developers are reworking key scenes to strengthen the narrative of Kliff’s journey (a crucial step, given the criticism the story faced at launch).
  • New combat content — challenges where you can prove your strength as Greymane.
  • “Re-Blockade” overhaul — a new phase, a more natural flow before and after the blockade, and improved rewards for liberating strongholds.
  • Improvements for Damian and Oongki — ensuring all three playable characters receive equal attention. Quality-of-life improvements for non-combat content—such as trading, farming, and other activities.

The financial picture is also telling. For the second quarter of 2026, Pearl Abyss reported consolidated revenue of 192.6 billion won (approximately $145 million) and an operating profit of 67.6 billion won. *Crimson Desert* sold over 5 million copies in just 26 days following its March 19 release. The game generated 136.1 billion won for the studio—accounting for 70% of total revenue. Notably, overseas sales made up 91% of the total, with North America and Europe alone contributing 75%. It is a massive success, and DLC will be the next step in retaining this player base.

Speaking of platforms, the Nintendo Switch 2 version has already reached a “playable baseline” and is currently undergoing performance optimization. The port is slated for release in the first half of 2027. However, there will be no mobile version; Pearl Abyss believes a mobile port would fail to preserve the game’s graphical quality. As for multiplayer, the studio is conducting “extensive” research into adding co-op, though they describe the task as “incredibly challenging.”

What’s next? Expect details on the DLC by September 30, with a release scheduled for late 2026. In the meantime, cross-save support, narrative adjustments, and new challenges are coming this summer. And yes, it will be a paid expansion, not a free one. But given Pearl Abyss’s ambitions, it promises to be worth it.
