The strategy game Cities: Skylines 2 is preparing for a major update that will fundamentally rework citizen behavior and utility algorithms. Paradox Interactive’s gaming division entrusted the project’s development to Iceflake Studios, and the decision is already paying off. The developers are regularly implementing tweaks, and the fan community is warming to the game, seeing real signs of life in the service support system.

How will city service logic and citizen behavior change?

Major structural changes will affect the operation of emergency vehicles. Until now, garbage trucks filled their trucks with waste from nearby buildings, preventing them from reaching problem areas. The latest patch will force emergency vehicles to reserve capacity for specific calls, ignoring smaller landfills along the way.

Housing demand: The algorithm now relies on the overall ratio of the city’s scale to the volume of vacant apartments, eliminating illogical declines.

Sim Finances: Residents’ regular income, rather than total accumulated capital, has become the priority factor when assessing purchasing power.

Commercial Rentals: Space will be allocated based on the economic needs of a specific district. Production facilities producing critical resources will be the first to claim space.

The new system guarantees increased business diversity in newly developed zones, laying the foundation for future economic mechanics.

Graphics and Detail: The patch will refresh the look of Cities: Skylines 2

The developers at Iceflake Studios haven’t limited themselves to just the internal algorithms. The simulator’s visuals will also receive a significant upgrade:

Cities Skylines 2 graphics

  • The Waterway Pass and Lakeland locations will feature fresh landscape texture details.
  • Tree LOD models will be reworked. Tree crowns will no longer disintegrate into individual branches when the camera zooms out.
  • Surface rendering will be transitioned to a new lighting and shadow calculation system, making terrain unevenness appear more realistic.

At the same time, the developers are creating updated window glass materials with a frosted effect. Optimizing this element will also slightly reduce the system load when rendering densely populated areas.

The community agrees: the city-building flagship exceeds expectations

After the project was handed over to Iceflake Studios, audience reaction changed beyond recognition. The publication of the latest report sparked a flurry of positive reviews on relevant platforms. Many fans note that the pace of updates has restored their confidence in the project.

Some players directly point out that the current content of the base version of Cities: Skylines 2 already surpasses the original Cities: Skylines without paid DLC. If the developers continue to cultivate feedback in this vein, the simulator has every chance of finally cementing its status as the best game in the genre.
