Ubisoft has finally achieved what it had long been waiting for. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced sold 2 million copies within the first 24 hours of its July 9th release. This marks the best launch in the series’ history on Steam, with peak concurrent players hitting 416,000 on the second day. Gross revenue on Steam alone reached $35 million, with $22.4 million generated on launch day—and this is despite the game also being available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

2 million copies in 24 hours: the series’ best Steam launch

The figures are impressive, even when compared to recent installments. Assassin’s Creed Shadows earned $9.5 million on its debut day and $22.2 million over four days; Resynced surpassed that result on day one alone. According to analyst Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics, the remake has already generated nine times the revenue of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and nearly nineteen times that of Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Furthermore, the 701,000 copies sold on Steam represent only a fraction of the total: Ubisoft’s official figures cite 2 million copies across all platforms. The discrepancy is easily explained: analysts tracked Steam sales only, whereas Ubisoft aggregated data from all storefronts.

Why the Black Flag remake took off: 3 reasons

Black Flag Resynced gameplay

First: nostalgia meets technology. Resynced is not merely a remaster but a full-fledged remake built on a modern version of the Anvil engine. It utilizes the same technology found in the series’ latest entries but eschews bloated RPG mechanics. The developers consciously abandoned leveling systems, progression trees, and dialogue sequences, returning instead to classic action-adventure gameplay with a focus on exploration and naval combat.

Second: a simultaneous release across all platforms. Unlike recent Ubisoft titles that launched on Steam with a delay, Resynced debuted everywhere simultaneously. This had an immediate impact: 30% of players came from the US, and 15% from China.

Thirdly, there is the unique audience composition. 29% of Resynced players had also played Sea of Thieves, 12% had played Windrose, and 25% were fans of the original game. In other words, the remake attracted not only hardcore Assassin’s Creed fans but also a broader audience of pirate-game enthusiasts.

Is it worth buying in 2026? The verdict

On Metacritic, the user score hit a record-breaking 9.0—higher than that of the original Black Flag or Shadows. Critics have also been favorable, with scores of 85% on OpenCritic and 84% on Metacritic. Steam shows 76% positive reviews, despite some review-bombing over monetization issues.

For veterans, it’s a definite yes. It is the Black Flag you loved, but with 2026-era graphics, overhauled mechanics, and new story sequences. For newcomers, it’s the best entry point into the series: no bloated RPG progression systems, just pure pirate action.

The only caveat: don’t expect DLC. Ubisoft has officially confirmed that Resynced features no downloadable content or multiplayer modes. Anything sold as an “add-on” consists merely of pre-order bonuses (such as the Blackbeard pack) and cosmetic sets for the Deluxe Edition. The $59.99 Standard Edition delivers the complete experience.

Technical failure and the July 16 patch: what happened

The first weekend after launch was marred by a problem: Ubisoft Connect—the game’s DRM and authentication system—went down. PC players were unable to launch the game, even in offline mode. The “Play offline” feature simply didn’t work; the app would crash during login attempts. The developers have promised a fix: a major patch is set for release on Thursday, July 16. It has been officially announced that the update will address stability and performance issues and may also overhaul the way Ubisoft Connect operates.

However, this financial success was marred by an unpleasant incident: Ubisoft laid off part of the Resynced development team on launch day. The developers publicly condemned the unfair dismissals, calling the move a betrayal after years of hard work. The game’s success standing in stark contrast to the layoffs creates a somber picture—the company celebrates record-breaking figures, while the very people who made them possible are left behind.

The bottom line: Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is a triumph of nostalgia, technology, and a sound release strategy. With 2 million copies sold in a single day, record-breaking ratings, and a peak of 416,000 concurrent players, Ubisoft has finally secured a long-awaited hit. Yet, technical issues and developer layoffs serve as a reminder that even the brightest success casts a shadow. The July 16 patch aims to fix the most critical problems. Meanwhile, fans are already voting with their wallets—and their voices have been heard.
