Having all the plans before the release of The Outer Worlds in 2019, Obsidian Entertainment studio already had large-scale plans for a sequel. The developers dreamed of making the sequel broader and deeper — with a larger scale, more intense role-playing development of characters, lively interaction with the world and a tangible impact of events on the fate of the hero. A new level of RPG freedom: how The Outer Worlds 2 changes the rules of the game
The Outer Worlds 2 has kept its promise for a bigger release than its predecessor. In an interview with Game Informer, Obsidian studio director Brandon Adler said that the team carefully listened to the feedback from fans who dreamed of more — more worlds, tasks and time for space exploration.
“The players liked our world and they wanted more. We heard them: “Give us new areas, more quests, let us live longer in this universe.” This has become our main goal,” Adler said.
The second part of the dream will not only provide a base, but will also be responsive to the player’s actions: the decisions and characteristics of the character now have a more noticeable effect on the events and reactions of others. Special attention is paid to the development of the hero — skills, traits and flaws can be freely combined, creating a unique style of passing.
Creative director Leonard Boyarsky emphasized that the sequel would get rid of the limitations that prevented the player from fully revealing the player’s choice in the original.:
“In the first part, we were bound by the framework — it was impossible to allow a player’s decision to accidentally “cut off” 10% of the content. Now we can afford the scale and depth, returning to the very role-playing systems that the fans missed.”
The Outer Worlds 2 is scheduled to be released on October 29, 2025 — the game will be released on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
